I came across a great article about <a target="_blank" href="http://
www.prma-enhance.com/index.cfm/PageID/4262">finding a DIEP flap
surgeon</a> while I was researching breast reconstruction options.
Thought others might benefit from it too:

I personally found this article really useful. While there are plenty
of DIEP flap surgeons across the country, I didn't realize so few of
these "specialists" perform DIEP breast reconstruction routinely. Some
docs advertizing the procedure have not necessarily performed that
many DIEP flaps at all!! Not very comforting.

The article above was very useful in educating me as to which
questions to ask to ensure the surgeon we chose had the necessary
experience. There are also a bunch of links in the article to other
sites listing DIEP docs around the country (now that you know what
questions to ask). Hope others find the article as useful as I did.

The same website also has some good info about the <a target="_blank"

as well as <a target="_blank" href="http://www.prma-enhance.com/
index.cfm/PageID/1571">breast reconstruction options in general</a>:

I don't know who you are and even if you are a breast cancer survivor. The
links look like commerical advertisement to me.

I only know what is available in my area and only a small fraction of the
qualifed surgeons where listed.

yeah, I wonder why anyone here couldn't google articles himself or herself.
could be "advertizing" (sic) indeed.

No, not advertizing at all. We just had to spend a lot of time
researching all of this as no-one in our area offered DIEP flap
reconstruction. I was merely passing on something that I found very
useful. While I found both the responses to my post rather cynical,
I'm sorry if I caused any offense. That was certainly not the
intention.

Hi b.

Have you had your DIEP flap reconstruction yet? If so, would you tell
us about the procedure, recovery, and so on, from your point of view?

Thank you,

Ixia

Are you in US?  Where?  In Canada?
In US if you're on the east coast, you want to look up Dr. Joshua
Levine.  He is an exceptional Plastic Surgeon in NYC.  I've seen him
work and I was very impressed with him.  Although he is in private
practice (at least he was when I was there) and not associated with
any big name institutions, he is probably one of the best in US.  His
partner, Bob Allen, is the man who invented DIEP and I think he now
works out of NYU (but with Levine you get Levine operating on you, not
residents)
If you're on the west coast, you want to check out the Buncke Clinic
in SF.  There are many people advertising DIEPs in SF but Buncke is
the best.
Finally, MD Anderson in Texas has several surgeons who would be pretty
good in DIEPS.
In Canada you want Ed Buchel or Tom Hayakawa out of Winnipeg.  Hand
down amongst the best in the world of DIEP flaps.
