If I recall correctly, the triptans became available in 1993 or so.
Since then there have been numerous reports of cardiovascular events
following the use of triptan type drugs. Many doctors refuse to
prescribe these treatments to anyone and some only to those who have
absolutely no evidence of cardiovascular disease of any kind. In my
personal opinion, these drugs are like playing with fire. As powerful
vaso-constrictors they affect the entire cardiovascular system causing
sudden and abrupt changes and associated adverse effects. And, since
migraine and cluster headache are not completely understood it seems
foolish to be taking such a drug. It works for some but it will be
interesting to see the outcome for those who have used this type of
drug over and extended period of time.
