I have a friend who's asked me to post this question.

She's in her mid forties, is on Tamoxifin and is four years out from her
chemo.  She says her hair came in full after the chemo, but it seems to be
thinning now.  Has anyone experienced the same thing and is there anything
you've done to curb the progression.

Mark, try Googling "Tamoxifen Alopecia".

You will find that this is a known but unusual side effect of Tamoxifen.
Of course it can have other causes too.  The literature suggests that
if it is the cause, then stopping Tamoxifen for a while will probably
allow the hair to grow back, and if it does, then other drug options can
be considered.

Hi Mark,

My onc suggested that once I am done with Tamoxifen (not quite thru
menopause yet - they will check again after the Holidays) then he will put
me on "Aredia"  (I hope I have this one right but I know that if not someone
out there will come to my rescue)  He said that this particular drug has
more of a "androgenic" effect and may help with my thin hair.

Arimidex? That is a common estrogen-suppressor for the post-menopausal,
which would be given in place of Tamoxifen.

Aredia is a bone strengthening bisphosphonate drug to combat
osteoporosis, which can also be a side effect of estrogen suppression.
He might prescribe that as well if your bone density is low, but not
instead.

Thanks Tim, I knew I had the drug name wrong but I know it isn't Arimidex.

Just looked it up and I think the name is Aromasin (exemestane)

That'll do. Same class of drug as Arimidex.

I've had no problem with hair loss with Arimidex.  In fact my hair is
now as thick as it was before chemo, and a few shades darker.

I, OTOH, have much less hair than I had before.  I note that thinning hair
is among the listed side effects of Arimidex.  I was so desperate over my
semi-bald pate that I was thinking about getting hair transplants, but I've
decided to wait and see what happens when I complete my Arimidex treatment
in 2010.  (Assuming I'm still alive to care about it, that is.)

I hadn't noticed that.  I'm sory if I seemed to be crowing, that was not
my intention.

Isn't there an alternative drug you can take?
