I just went for my every 6 month visit to my breast surgeon who has
been following me for 10 years after discovery of microcalcifications
in my left breast. The radiologist noted slight changes in my mammo of
two years ago and the breast surgeon did a stereotactic needle biopsy
but was unable to remove the microcalcification. He placed a
mammotone clip at the site for future reference at that time. This
visit was just an exam without a mammo. When he examined me he felt a
mass very close to the calcification site and I am now scheduled for
an ultrasound and diagnostic digital mammogram. Of course, I am very
nervous what it will show.
I am very worried that the microcalcifications have now become
cancer. Does this happen? I know that microcalcifications can be
precursors of cancer and I am afraid that that is what happened.

Normal to be scared, have the mass remove they will be able to give
you an answer. Alex

The answer is essentially yes, but it is a bit like asking "can
footprints in the garden become burglars."
Microcalcifications are indicators of tissue damage. This can result
from abnormal growths, whether benign or malignant, or from other
stresses including surgery. So if the microcalcifications were being
caused by a growth which was at first benign but became malignant, as
does sometimes happen, then it would as you put it "become cancer".
Good luck with your investigation, I hope it turns out benign.

I can't advise on your situation but my experience was that I thought I felt
a soft lump on the outer part of my right breast in 1990. A mammogram was
done and showed microcalcifications and I was advised that although it
wasn't a problem I should have it out because 'ladies worry'. I indignantly
refused!
In 1998 after a routine mammogram a cancer was found in the same breast but
at the other side from where the calcifications had shown. They were not
visible any more. I doubt very much that there was any connection.
My latest mammo showed some calcifications dotted around, I'm not worried.
Don't be afraid, if you are eventually diagnosed with cancer you'll be
treated, there's no certainty of such a diagnosis though.
Be careful crossing the road :-)
Hugs,
Mary

Thanks to all who have replied. My original diagnostic mammo and
ultra sound was scheduled for October 3, even though the surgeon said
he wanted to see me within two weeks with the films. I called and had
the tests rescheduled for this Wednesday and Thursday with an
appointment with the Dr. next Wednesday. I am keeping my fingers
crossed that it's just a cyst. Will let you all know. Thanks again.
