My oncologist is leaving town

I went for a 6-month follow-up visit (finished my Herceptin treatment in
June....how time flies!) and was shocked to discover that my oncologist is
going to close up her private practice and move to Minnesota to work at the
Mayo Clinic.  At the Mayo Clinic she will be able to spend her time treating
patients, teaching, and researching instead of fighting with insurance
companies all day.  Well, good for her, she deserves to advance her career,
but I am very disappointed to lose the continuity of care.  I think I ought
to try and get a copy of my records so that I can give them to whatever
doctor is going to follow me from now on.  I have to say I feel kind of
adrift here.

Is your oncologist at a cancer center?  If so, and you select another onco
there, they will have access to your current charts without a lot of fuss on
your part.  (Cynically, I'm not sure most docs read them very closely
anyway -- they're so busy -- so I'd suggest asking for a longer appointment
your first time with the new person, and doing a complete verbal recap with
them, maybe pointing out key events in your chart as well as sharing your
current thoughts & concerns.)

I've been through 3 medical oncologies already, over 6 years.  They were all
at the same cancer center, though.  I haven't experienced any concerns
related to continuity of care.  This is one case where I hope your
experience *won't* differ!

Happy holidays,

Ann T.

Hi Eva,
A number of years ago, I also had to bid my oncologist farewell.  I'm in
Pennsylvania, and he was going to New Mexico.  For a while I felt like I
ought to pack up and follow him there ;)   Thank goodness, I was able to
remain objective enough to give the new guy a chance.  I really trusted and
liked him a lot too.  At my twenty year mark, the "new" guy discharged me,
but not before I got a solemn promise that if I ever needed an oncologist
again, he's accept me as his patient.  (I did stay at the same Cancer
Treatment Center).  I hope that you are as fortunate, and are able to find a
new Dr. that you like.

Be encouraged that a "new set of eyes" and experiences will more times than
not be a positive for you.

That is an excellent point, but I feel Eva's pain after 20+ with one primary
doctor we have to find another.   It is just plain painful experience.

Yes, we do tend towards being proprietorial about our professionals :-)

I've been through it (but not with an onc) and it seems devastating at first
but usually I've learned to love and trust the replacement.
