Hectic as normal.  In the last couple of weeks everything seems to have
happened - I got a long postponed dental implant done, my Dad died (he
was 91 and it was expected, right now my desk is covered with his estate
documents), my girlfriend in Kenya finally got visas for her and her
children to come here (after 15 months delay!), my best friend & his
family came over to visit from California, and it's school holidays!

Apart from that, nothing special.

How's things with you?

Saima,
Is there a lymphedema clinic? One of my former co workers is a childhood
cancer survivor, she uses compression treatment and a pump.
http://www.lymphacare.com/

She has a busy life ( young kids, work , Etc), doesn't use it every day but
when she feels she needs it. It provides her relief.

Good news about the visas. Best wishes. :)

Tim,

I have had my implant now for a few months....best thing I did. If I ever
need another root canal, I am going straight for the implant.
Sorry to hear about your Dad, my dad died at age 90 ....few days shy of 91,
although it is not unexpected at this age it is still a loss.
Is you girlfriend coming for a visit or to live?  Sounds like you life is
full.....Alex

The implant was really easy, but quite expensive. I got to be a model
for a training course and got a huge discount, and the guy doing it was
an expert and on his best behaviour for the audience.  I'm in the
healing-abutment stage right now. By the end of the week everything was
back to normal, bruising had gone, eating as normal.

Sure, if I could afford it I'd go straight for the implant.  But the
economics of single parenting don't put me in that category.

Sorry about your Dad too.  Yes it's a loss, but as he had vascular
dementia, most of the Dad I knew had already gone months ago, and losing
the body was just closure.

On the other hand, you might remember I briefly mentioned back in '01
that he had a pacemaker installed.  I can feel gratified that by
recognising his TIA's and reporting them to his GP (of course Dad never
bothered to mention them) I got him in for cardiogram, and that led to
his pacemaker.  The result was he got an extra lease of fairly normal
life for 3 or 4 years before the dementia set in and things went downhill.

They are coming to live.  I've just been trying to sort out school
places for the kids.  It's all quite exciting, after so long of just
maintaining an internet relationship.  Of course it's a bit challenging
getting the wheels of relationship turning again after such a long
stall.  And getting the kids settled here will probably be a challenge
too - there will no doubt be plenty of culture shock.

The implants here cost between $1500- $3000, not including the crown. I a
root canal cost about $1200 ( depending on how many roots the tooth has).
My implant has the final crown on. My dental surgeon used the bicon
http://www.bicon.com/index.htm since it is a local dentist who developed
this. One of my co worker had a tooth extracted and the implant placed at
the same time ( she goes to the inventor of the implant) which is cheaper
and shortens the process.

Last year when I had the initial work done, I had to pay for it in cash, as
of January 1, this year implants are now covered by dental insurance so they
paid for the abutment and crown. ( the dental insurance caps at $1500 but
that does help).

How many kids will there be in total, your stepson is in the military-
really a man now, your daughter and how many  does your girlfriend have? It
maybe an adjusted for you daughter since she was the sole focus of your
world for awhile, but it will be healthy too for her to have other kids and
a female around ( no offense there are some things a father , as well as a
mother just can't do, like picking out make up or shopping for clothes).

Glad to hear things are going great.  Enjoy Life, Alex

The implant normally costs around the upper end of that range here.  I
had a couple of root canal post-and-crowns before, that was a lot
cheaper, I think about £400 each, but both eventually broke, and on this
one the root was cracked and started to decay so it had to go, and no
way was I grinding down my remaining healthy teeth to fit a bridge: as
an engineer I'd condemn that structure out of hand.

Yes, I had that.  They said it was OK as long as there was no
significant infection around the root and the bone was in good condition.

Yes, it does. We are supposed to get dentistry available on the NHS but
it is a joke because in some areas like ours few dentists will actually
work at NHS rates, and most people can't get it. And anyway the NHS
wouldn't do implants - they'd say it is cosmetic, and they still require
a percentage contribution for labwork, even crowns.  There are various
private dental insurance schemes but I've never been offered one that
covers implants.  It's probably cheaper to use a credit card anyway.

She has two kids, 10 & 13, so there will be 3 kids at home.  Yes there
is bound to be some rivalry, I hope we can cope with it.  I dare say
there will be some ethnic stresses as well, they being African and the
main communities in our town being European and Bangladeshi.  But it
will be good to get to share the responsibilities, and hopefully cut
down on the task-switching a bit.  And I get to skive off shopping trips!
