Hi,
Was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the use of decadron in chemo patients. They give me decadron with my premeds before chemo and added it to control the nausea afterwards when Tigan as I didn't want to use compazine since it makes me really woozy and Tigan alone wasn't working. Any one have any thoughts, or experiences good or bad re: the use of this medication.

It's fairly standard to use this as part of the chemo anti-nausea
package. It's a steroid anti-inflammatory which has been shown to have
synergistic benefits when combined with serotonin blockers like Zofran.
In this use, as a single dose, it doesn't usually have much side
effect, maybe a bit of water retention.
It's also sometimes used for inflamation control in metastatic cancers,
but then it tends to be taken over a longer period.

My wife takes 5 tablets of Decadron at 12 and 6 hours prior
to chemo with Taxol. Haven't noticed any problems with it.
We are not using it post-chemo.
