Hi all:
My wife was taking tamoxifen for more than a year after
surgery,chemo... she has bone mets. The progression of bone mtes made
the doctor come to the conclusion that tamoxifen was not working well.
By that time my wife became post menopausal. She is 43. So the doctor
put her on femara. She's been taking femara for more than two months
now. All of sudden, her period came few days ago. The last period was
almost a year and a half ago. So here we are in a situation where
tamoxifen was not working well but femara is for post menopausal woman.
We expect to see doctor next week. Anybody has any ideas that what
advices we could get from the doctor or what we should ask the doctor?
Your help is much appreciated.
Regards,
J.S

The fact that she had a bleed does not necessarily make her
pre-menopausal as far as hormones are concerned. Yes it might be a good
idea to get her hormone status re-checked, which is what matters for
Femara. That drug will not be effective if she is producing estrogen
from her ovaries. If she has high levels of FSH, the hormone which
stimulates the ovaries, then it is unlikely that they are producing any
estrogen.
On the other hand there might be other reasons for the bleed, eg
endometriosis, which also might bear checking out.

Hi
I had breast cancer and a chemo induced menopause at the age of 34. I
have had a couple of bleeds since i came off tamoxifen after 5 years in
2003. A blood test confirmed that i am still post menopausal and I then
had a check on my endometrium which was normal. I hope your doctor can
answer you questions and put your mind at rest next week.
Best wishes
Rachel

Your doctor will do a work up, or refer for a work up to see if this is
a period or an endometrial issue or something else. (I ran into this
recently, involved bloodwork, gyn exam, sonogram to check endometrial
lining).
If indeed your wife is not post-menopausal then she can take Zoladex (it
is a shot to make her post-menopausal) and continue on with the femara.
Good luck,
Chris
