It's 3 1/2 years since my wife's surgery and all seemed well.  However
yesterday we went to the onc for a routine check and he found
something; "It's probably nothing" he said, "but..."  So she'll have a
mammogram on Monday and no matter the outcome we'll take a second
opinion in a different town.  Hope she's not going to be back on the
cancer treadmill!!

No, she had a mastectomy last time.

The mammogram was inconclusive so she's going for an ultrasound on
Wednesday.  The waiting is very hard on her.

Absolutely!  (I have to admit I sometimes fall back on anti-anxiety
drugs in these "waiting for test results" scenarios).  Maybe schedule
some special treat (family thing, night out, day trip, massage?) as a
distraction?

I am new to this news group, so forgive me if I am speaking out of turn
without all the facts...etc.

I first had breast cancer 20 years ago this spring.  I had a lumpectomy
and axillary disection, was node positive, so I also had CMF chemo
followed by radiation.  About two years ago I noticed a small lump in my
armpit, same side as the cancer.  Went to the GP who ordered an
ultrasound, with negative results.  Then he sent me to a surgeon, who
felt the lump and assured me it was only a cyst, not cancer.

Last September a mammogram and ultrasound revealed that the cancer had
reappeared in the same breast.  At my appointment with the breast
surgeon specialist (different than the forementioned surgeon)to discuss
the mastectomy, I pointed out the lump.  She felt it, and with my
agreement, decided to cut it out, just to be sure.  It was cancer and
had spread to the skin, requiring more surgery to get the margins clear.

I am sorry if this alarms you, the surgeon said it was rather rare, but
I wish I had insisted on a biopsy two years ago.  Rachel in Scottsdale

Thanks Rachel:  My wife has been dealing with cancer, first lung and
then breast, for almost eleven years and we are aware of the diagnostic
problems, having had a couple of incorrect ones.  If her ultrasound is
negative we'll have to face the question of whether or not to go ahead
with a biopsy, but we're taking it a step at a time.  Don't know which
way we'll go, guess I'll leave it to her.

With mammogram and ultrasound in hand our med onc recommended a biopsy
( "If you were my mother..." ) so we're booked to see the surgeon next
Monday.  He's three hours drive away, but that's where the nearest
major cancer center is so that's where we'll go.  Wish us luck.
