FEC-100 and Taxotere protocol

Hi all
I'm not sure if you remember but I started chemotherapy for breast
cancer in October. I was to have 6 cycles of FEC-100. Since then my
oncologist has told me that there is a new clinical trial showing 3
cycles of FEC-100 and 3 cycles of taxotere to be slightly more
effective. This protocol is not yet approved in Canada and with our
public health system I cannot buy taxotere privately so I am going to
Ireland for 2 taxotere treatments as I can get it there.

Has anyone heard of this treatment. I have searched the company site
and the fda sites on taxotere and cannot find anything combining
FEC-100 and taxotere in this manner. Apparently it was a Swiss trial,
does that mean it would not be referenced in the fda site?

If someone could even suggest where to look I'd be grateful. My
oncologist is now on maternity leave so I can't go to her. I have
committed to the treatment but would like to find some more information
if possible.

Thanks

I don't know of that trial, what I remember is trials with AC and
Taxotere, that showed in principle that "classic" chemo and a taxane
combined sequentially (often known as TAC therapy) gave an advantage
over classic chemo alone (such as AC, CAF, FEC combinations). This is
now standard treatment in some countries.

Here is (among other things) a report on such an AC/TAC trial in 2001
that showed a significant improvement in response, which it concludes
should be reflected in future survival.

I think this may be the Phase 3 version of the Phase 2 TAC trial
Deborah did in 2000.

She did 8 cycles of TAC and got great response.  The trial protocol
wouldn't allow for more than 480mg/m2 of Adriamycin, though - so after
8 cycles they dropped the A and she continued on C + Taxotere for
another four cycles, then got dropped from the trial for disease
progression.  But - at least in our case the TAC thing was extremely
effective; considering she was Stage 4 at dx back in August 1999 I
think she's doing a hell of a job  ;-)

What's not approved in Canada?
Alberta seems to have FEC100 with 4 cycles of Taxotere but I think it's for
stage III
http://www.albertabreast.com/patientmd/stage3.php (bottom of the page)

I thought I saw one but Luxembourg
http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/
Docetaxel or taxotere and breast that gives me 50 clinical trials - have to
wade through each.
The other way, I searched was with taxotere AND each name of FEC, AND
breast

Ontario http://www.cancercare.on.ca/pdf/pebc1-20s.pdf Dec 2004 seems to be
the latest  Practice Guidelines (PEBC)
Maybe there are no Practice Guidelines nor clinical trials for someone your
age.
Would these people and/or a different oncologist help you sort it out?

Hi
Thanks for the responses. What isn't approved is using Taxotere in
Stage II adjuvant treatment. I know it's used for Stage III and above
and for other forms of cancer but using it in earlier stages hasn't yet
been approved. It is good to see the combination of the FEC-100 and
taxotere though, although mine is 3 sessions of each, it does ease my
mind. When I looked at the treatment for Stage II, even high risk,
which I am it has FEC-100 X 6 which is the same as in Ontario.

Thanks
