My friend is 40 and has just been diagnosed with breast cancer today. She is
a single mum with a young child and virtually no support from her own
family. I spoke to her on the phone tonight and she is distraught, drunk,
etc. Are there any crisis lines or organisations she can turn to to help her
through the next few days? She lives near Leeds UK

When I was diagnosed back in August 2005, I contacted these people.  The
website is very helpful, and they also offer one-to-one telephone
counselling.

I hope your friend finds them as helpful as I did

I hope that she will be successfully treated and be as lucky in her NHS
treatment as I have been.

Also her assigned breast care nurse should be able to put her in touch
with any local groups and available services in her area.

Does she have internet access?  If so she could talk to this newsgroup
(and others) for help.

There is a list of useful sites, books, etc., probably somewhat dated,
on our FAQ website at www.cancersupporters.com.

Do you know what her diagnosis was; tumour size, etc.  While of course
all breast cancer diagnoses are life threatening and shocking, there are
degrees of seriousness from over 95% curable down to about 75% fatal,
and this obviously has an impact on the sort of problems she is facing.
