Well I had my US this morning. Was pretty quick and painless but no real
news.
We do know that it is definately NOT a blocked milk duct and definately NOT
a cyst. We don't know what it is though.

The Dr. did say it's quite diffuse?? what ever that is and close to the
surface of the skin and very close to the aerola (Sp?)

I go back and see Dr MA on Wedneday for further steps which will probably be
a biospy. I was wondering though if I request a lumpectomy instead do you
think they'd do it?? I just want the lump gone.

Melissa

btw hubby did come with me.

Well they could do a "surgical biopsy" which is pretty much the same as
a lumpectomy.  But as it is diffuse there is a significant risk that if
it is cancer, the surgeon wouldn't get it all the first time anyway.
And if it isn't, there might be a non-invasive way of getting rid of it.

Talk to the surgeon or doctor about the idea.

They don't normally do that for such an easily accessible and palpable
lump though, because the needle biopsy is so straightforward.  There is
not much rush (clinically, although of course you may feel differently),
these things grow very slowly and if cancer it has probably been there
undetected and slowly growing for the last ten years.

Ok, thats sounds reasonable. But what exactly does diffuse mean???  I'm
still scratching my head over that one lol

It means that the ultrasound does not show sharp boundaries.  If it were
a fluid filled sac you would get a sharp reflection from the boundaries
between liquid and solid.

Cancers often appear diffuse because they tend to grow in a spidery
(eponymously crab-like) manner, but the "legs" are too fine to resolve
on the image, so show as a diffuse boundary.

However other things are also diffuse, inflammations involve true
diffusion of fluid through the tissue so would show as diffuse also.
This is probably what we are looking at.  If so, antibiotics might cure it.

A cluster of small objects each too small to resolve would show as a
larger diffuse object.  This sometimes happens with cancer too, but then
it probably wouldn't feel like a lump but a "stiffening".

Thank you! I have been searching all day for what this means lol! Now I can
tell the hubby.
