Hi I just celebrated 1 yr. Had my blood work done Sept 4, called the next day
told me to cut back on the calcium. I ran out so I haven't taken any since
Sept. 7. Had to have my blood work redone Monday the 29th. Called me and told
me it was still to high. Now next Monday I have to have more blood work, then
have a Bone Scan.
I was DX. 8/03 Lumpectomy with sentinal node biopsy, clear nodes 9/11/03 chemo
and radiation. When I picked up my FMLA form from the oncologist office it said
to DX breast cancer. Scared me. What do you think?

Hi, Nancy,
If your medical providers are like mine, I don't think you should
worry. Every authorization form for blood tests, bone scans, Xrays,
ultrasounds, etc., since my BC treatment has had "Breast Cancer" as the
basic diagnosis listed on the form.
I was treated almost 3 years ago. A bone scan, some supplemental xrays,
and 2 sets of blood work all in the last month have shown NED . . . but
the authorization forms for the chest Xray & blood work I'm supposed to
have before my next (April '04) oncologist appointment still have
"breast cancer" in the diagnosis.
I kinda think that they do this because our history of BC is what leads
them to do major tests for no or relatively minor symptoms -- tests they
wouldn't do in the same circumstances for women without our history --
and the BC diagnosis has to be there to keep the insurance companies
warm and fuzzy about paying for these unusual tests.
Tests always cause anxiety, but I don't think you need to have any
anxiety just on account of their filling out the forms that way!

Hi Nancy, sorry to hear of the difficulties you've been having. What is an
FMLA form??? Also, you wrote ""said to DX breast cancer"--was that before you
had a breast cancer dx? Sorry, but found info and question a little confusing.
Hope all is okay. Take care...

I'm not Nancy, but do know what an "FMLA form" is. Under the U.S.
"Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)", you have entitlement to unpaid
leave from your job because of your or a family members' serious
illness, and may qualify for continuation of health benefits. There are
exceptions (such as small employers) and limitations, but that's the
gist. Many employers will ask you to have your doctor fill out & sign
an "FMLA form" to certify that you meet the conditions for leave. For
more info, see:
