Hi,

I have read where Fosamax ,Zometa and Aredia have been
linked to osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Here are a couple of articles, including one from a
group of oral surgeons. The drug companies are now
just coming out with warnings

I also came across a law firm that specializes in
compensation settlements for victims worldwide that
suffer from Fosamax and
Zometa
side effects. Their website is

Hope this helps

Oh Joy!  Something else to worry about!  The USA article was very
interesting  but it would have helped had it given some information as
to what we should do if we HAVE to take the Zometa IV annually.

I have stomach problems and my Oncologist insists the Zometa IV is
easier on the stomach (even though it makes me sick as a dog for a day
or two!).  I doubt he is even aware of this new side effect.  I am
printing a copy of the USA report and giving it to him but I bet he will
just fluff it off as being more "internet" scare crap and tell me to
ignore it.  Well I hope he is right because I do not want to have jaw
problems to add to everything else.

Does anyone out there know of anything SAFE one can take instead of the
Zometa which is easy on stomach problems??

I discussed this with my oncologist on 6/7 as I have the Zometa infusion
monthly because of mets to the bone. He said they are doing research on why
the jaw is effected but the cause is not known. One unproven theory is that
the Zometa infusion should be given a half hour instead of the 15 to 20
minutes which sometimes is the case.
He doubted that the FDA would approve it now for yearly infusion when
osteoporosis is the only problem.

Thanks so much for the added input,  Greta.  I will be sure to ask my
Oncologist about this and make sure he doesn't try to switch me to one
of his "other" IV drugs he says he uses which may be the same ingredient
as Zometa.  From what I have read, many of the others have the same
dangerous side effect.
