Horrible Femara Side Effects

My mom took Femara for 6 days. On the 6th day she started experiencing
horrible abdominal, back and side pain that would move around during the
day. The pain was so bad initially that all she could do is lie in bed all
day to feel better. Her doctor advised her to take Aleve or Advil. It has
now been 14 days since she stopped taking Femara and she is still
expieriencing pain though not as severe. The pain has lessened but comes
back at times. How long does it take Femara to get out of your system? Are
there any lasting side effects?

Thanks in advance, I look forward to a response by anyone who knows
anything.

My wife has been on Femara for over three years w/o any side effects.  The
drug blocks estrogen so the side effects may be from that.  What did her
doctor tell her the reason for her pain might be?

I too have been taking Femara for over 2 years and absolutely NO side
effects; If I remember correctly that's been the comment of about everyone
on the list postmenopausal, taking Femara. I had already gone thru
menopause, and I believe that is one of the requirements for qualifying to
take the drug - post menopausal.

Hope your Mom feels better soon. If not, I'd have them check for something
other than side effects.

Dave I started taking Famara February 22, 2004 right after my radiation. In
early March I started having problems with pain in my back but I thought it
was from my Cholestral drug. As the months dragged on I had more problems
with arthralgia, pain in the hands, joint pain in the knees and ankles and
hips, electrifying pain in the toes, fatigue, hot flushes, dyspnea. When I
had my yearly physical my Dr. told me this was not from the Provocol. I
called my Oncologist and she said they were side effects from the Femara
and to stop taking it. Most of the pain stopped after a week but It has
taken three months for most all the side effects to stop. I am now on
Tomoxifen two months and have no side affects.

I have been on Femara (2.5 mg daily) for 3 months with no side effects.
I did experience what you describe after the first Zometa infusion.

It's not very likely, but I wonder about porphyria.  Has she ever had a bout
of unexplained abdominal pain before?

Took my mom to the doctor today and he said it was a "flare up" from the
tumor when the Femara blocked the estrogen. This means the Femara is working
for her. I don't know how long the flare ups last. She is going to have an
MRI in a couple of days and see what that shows. The doctor said that there
were some places around here spine that were of concern from her PET scan.
She is really scared to start taking the Femara again because of the pain
she expierenced. The doctor said he would perscribe something to lessen the
pain.

dave-
i've been on femara for over a year now.  i had the "flare" when i first
started it too.  i felt really crappy and had a lot of increased pain.  it
lasted about 2 or 3 weeks tops.  pain meds helped alot.  if there is no
other cause of the pain (i.e. some other problem) then i would try the
femara again.  it's done wonders for me, and once you're settled into it,
there are few side-effects.  it's one of the best bests going for anyone
with hormone-receptor positive cancer.
good luck.
hang in there.
