I'm the less than proud new Mom of a 4cm mass in my right breast. Yeah,...
skip the cigars... I have to share my favorite radiologist quote of the
day: "That's gotta come out!" They need to send these guys to charm
school!
The surgeon & radiologist want me to have an excisional biopsy and
apparently I have a choice between local anesthesia and general.
Any recommendations? I'm not a big fan of pain or horrific cutting noises.
I'm also not a wimp and I don't want general if this isn't a big deal.

congrats on the new baby.
I am assuming that this lump is superficial, otherwise they wouldn't
recommend a local. They can give you some IV medications that will keep you
awake but blissfully unaware of what is going on.
General is takes a day or two to recover, we a new baby you may not have the
luxury of being down for several days.
Hopefully it is nothing, let us know, Alex

I had an excisional biopsy done under local (parenthetically, I also
had a 4 cm mass). While I was vaguely aware of what was going on, I
was entirely unconcerned--due, I'm sure, to some of those IV drugs
Alex mentioned. There was no pain whatever during the procedure and I
couldn't actually hear anything, um, sawlike or anything. The
anaesthetist chatted with me throughout, I suspect in order to
distract me.
Waiting for the results will probably be the toughest part. Good luck.

Same answer as to another post. I had a local for a lumpectomy which sounds
like an excisional biopsy to me. Anyhow. Not at all traumatic but not for
everyone I suppose. There was a drape over my face and there were no
terrible sounds. A beeping whenever the instrument was doing a
cauterization (sp). There was no smell of any sort such as burning or
anything like that. Doc talked to me about what he was doing. I asked
questions. This is something I would do again. General anesthesia doesn't
appeal to me at all.
