Hi -

I was diagnosed on Thursday with Ductal carcinoma in situ and Lobular
Carcinoma in Situ. I'm having lumpectomy on Monday and forgot to as my
doctor a question. How long should I expect to be out of work after this
procedure? Thanks for any help or guidance you can give me.

This surgery is a piece of cake compared to what I have had with rheumatoid
arthritis.  I was given Versed with something else which I think was for
pain and was not out very long.  Mine only took about half hour.  Since you
have the lobular too it might be longer, but best part is it is
non-invasive.  He took only tiny piece and put a suture that could just be
pulled out after 2 weeks, and some steri strips that gradually came off with
bathing.  I took the first suture out so as not to drive 75 miles for him to
do it.  Unless they do something different to you I don't see why you would
have to miss any work.

The first surgeon I saw was going to take a hunk out size of a tangerine,
that is why I went to another and glad I did.  I was told to wear either a
sports bra or support bra for 2 weeks so would not move area and pull
stitches.  If you have to get a sports bra don't get the ones that you have
to pull on over your head, that is difficult and straps were not long enough
for me.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out for you.

That was my experience, too.  I missed work the day of the surgery, but that's
it.  I went out to dinner that evening - felt perfectly fine (but a little
grungy not being able to shower just yet).

Since you have only just been diagnosed, it may be wise to distinguish
between the time you will need for physical recovery and psychological
recovery.

I had a lumpectomy two weeks after diagnosis.  I walked out of hospital the
day following the operation.  I was probably physically fit enough to return
to work two weeks after that. However, I decided to take a further four
weeks off from work.  Cancer is a shock, you need time to adjust if only to
reassess your life.  If you go back to work in a hurry you might find you
cannot cope later on.

All the best to you, you will be in my thoughts
