I see articles mentioning this being done in the UK, Finland, & Italy.
Is this not possible in the US?

It is possible.  You could ask the anesthesiologist.  I don't know what the
pros and cons are.

Why would someone want to be awake for a procedure that's this involved?

Examples:
- a quicker recovery,
- fear of the risks associated with general anaesthesia,
- having a medical condition which makes generals inadvisable,
- just plain ghoulish interest

to name but a few.

I had a local on 09DEC04.  It was OK.  I felt some pain 2 or 3 times and the
doc immediately injected more pain meds.  Not at all traumatic.
