Here is an article about Tamoxifen that might be of interest:

http://www.breastcancer.org/tre_sys_tamox_prvntRecur_pf.html

The article says Tamoxifen can reduce recurrence by 5-10% in post-menopausal
women, whose cancers are estrogen-receptor-negative.

Although I am ER-,  my doctor prescribed Tamoxifen for me, and I have been
taking it for about a month.  I am 75, and had a lumpectomy in May of this
year.  I decided against chemo, after one treatment.  My doctor also told me
that lab tests can be wrong; that I could in fact be ER+.  She also supports
my decision not to take chemo, saying it would only be about 3% effective at
my age.

My doctor thinks Tamoxifen may reduce the risk of cancer in the opposite
breast, or in the same breast.  It has other benefits I need, such as
lowering cholesterol levels and helping prevent osteoporosis, so I think it
is right for me.  I have no side effects to date.

Best regards to everyone here,

Joan

I have been reading a lot on different treatments.  There seems to be a new
theory now that if over 70 it is questionable whether radiation would be
necessary.  I have not been told yet about tamoxifen, I ah ER+ with
calcification removal which is basically same as lumpectomy.  I really hope
not to take tamoxifen as since had to stop hormone replacement I have
terrific hot flashes now and understand the medicine would make them worse.
Do you have them?
Peggy

Peggy, I don't have hot flashes, and in fact, have never had one.  I have
only been taking Tamoxifen for a month now, with no side effects I am aware
of.  I did have a partial hysterectomy at the age of 38.

I had 35 radiation treatments after my surgery.  Mine was also a
calcification.  My last radiation was on the 16th of August, and I am doing
fine right now.  I never had any side effects, except for some redness,
which is gone now.

Best wishes,
Joan
