Bone marrow problem?
Chemotherapy can cause it, but not usually permanently.
Is it associated with other symptoms, eg uncontrolled bleeding?

Maybe it depends how low  ???
there's a range mentioned here
http://training.seer.cancer.gov/module_diagnostic/unit02_lab_tests.html

and Medline mentions (some) possible causes
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000586.htm
Then a general "Drugs (very rare)"

Are you taking something else?

It could be sluggish production--a bone marrow problem--or overlay rapid
destruction as with hypersplenism (an enlarged spleen) or an immune process
attacking them as with idiopathic thromboctytopenia purpura.

I've had that and the doc gave blood transfusions - saying that mets were
crowding out the bone marrow which produces blood cells.
