Hello all,
My mom was treated for BC last year (stage 3) and things have been ok
till now. In the past 2 weeks however, her blood pressure has
increased to 170. Her lymphedema specialist told her the increase
wasnt related to cancer (she has had high bp before too), but I was
just wondering.
Any inputs on that?

Hello,
I posted this question a couple of days back, but did not get any
reply. Is it a very silly question to be asking? If so, do forgive my
ignorance. I guess I just tend to worry too much.

I think it is unlikely, it's certainly not a common symptom.
It's easy to forget after having a brush with cancer that you can still get
all the other regular ailments too.
Most likely it's something else.

Thanks Tim,
Thats what I thought too; but you know how it is; after going through
this hell once, any and every small little thing takes on omnious
overtones.
thanks.

Hi Jayashree. Saw your posting on alt.breast.cancer.support and thought I'd
try to help some.
I have lymphedema also from having all the lymph nodes under my right arm
removed during mastectomy. Lymphedema and/or breast cancer in themselves do
not cause high BP but it is possible that some of your mom's treatments (chemo
for example) may be causing a rise in her blood pressure. Chemo is very toxic
to the body and does cause the heart to work extra hard to pump the blood more
quickly to detoxify the body. Also chemo affects the kidneys which may be
involved in the formation of high BP.
Has your mom talked to her oncologist about her concerns about the BP? The
oncologist might want to refer her to a cardiologist for work-up to determine
if she may need some medication or some other type of treatment to help with
the BP. Also, your mom is under a lot of stress dealing with her cancer and/or
treatments, and it would not be unusual for her BP to run higher under such
stress. Additionally, she may be taking some medication to help her deal with
treatments that may be affecting her BP, such as pain medication.
So glad you care enough to ask about this and I bet your Mom really appreciates
it. Hope she finds out what is causing this increase in BP and also will keep
her in my prayers as she is going through her cancer treatments.
