If any one has been there done this I'd appreciate if you could
comment.

Here's the story.  I just got off the phone with my son's girlfriend.
Her mom has stage 4 ductal breast cancer and had a lumpectomy
and lymph nodes removed.  She then began chemo...during the
course of the chemo, she began having problems walking, (falling down)
etc., and was informed that the cancer had metasized to her brain.
They stopped the chemo and began radiation treatment on the northern
hemisphere of her brain.  Near the end of the treatment, the machine
they were using broke down, so they missed two days, and if I got this
correctly, she ended up getting two extra days to make up for the days
missed.  Almost immediately after the radiation was finished, she down
hill.  Dr said she had an adverse reaction to the radiation and that
her brain was swollen...she has little muscle control.  She also has
developed pneumonia and has had her iv fluids taken away.  She
is getting next to nothing in the way of nourishment...her daughter
is angry and terrified that they are to put it nicely "encouraging"
her to die.  Her father won't discuss anything with her and was mad
as hell that her little brother told her what was going on so that she
and her older brother could fly back there to "support" mom and the
family.  She's asking me what to do and if what they are doing is
right, and I don't know what to tell her.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,
Sue D.

Difficult to know what to do.  This progression sounds worryingly fatal,
and if so that the kindest thing would be to let her go, making her as
comfortable as possible in the meantime.  Of course it might be possible
to get over the immediate nasty situation, and she might survive for
years, although what sort of state she will be in is questionable.

I think this is really a situation where you need trust in her
professional carers.  There is little opportunity here to chose which
doctor is to take care of her, the relatives really have to work with
what she has.

I can understand that her husband has enough to cope with without what
he may see as well-meaning but unhelpful interference.  There is really
little they can do while she is under such intensive medical care.

Thanks for your input Tim.  The daughter is somewhat calmer now...I
think she thought she could go back there and save the day...don't
know if I am right or wrong, but I have told her that for now what I
would do...well what I did for my mom is find ANYTHING to brighten
mom's day...not easy to do when she is not lucid all the time...I'm
thinking foot rubs etc.  Any suggestions greatfully accepted.  They
are talking about moving her upstairs to the hospice next week.
I think that kinda made it more real for my son's gf.
My positive thoughts and prayers go out for all of you on this
newsgroup.

P.S.  Her mom's head is itching alot as new hair grows in...I'm
reluctant to suggest Cortaide or something similar...anything safe
that helps?  It seems like a dumb thing to have to deal with along
with everything else.
