Breast cancer can happen to anyone, there often is no identifiable
'cause'.  Even when all the known risk factors are taken into account,
no-one can explain more than about 50% of cases, the rest just strike at
random.  And the biggest known risk factors are being a woman, and life
itself, simply aging, and there is nothing you can do to avoid those.

Fortunately having caught it early, you have every chance of making a
complete recovery.  It's a pity you have to have more surgery, but these
things happen, and I expect you will soon be able to put the whole
episode behind you, and only have a scar to remember it by.

Tim is absolutely right. There is no point in asking the question "why
me" because this is so random. It is a very positive thing that it was
caught early;
and once you are done with your treatment, I am sure you will hardly
think about it.
Cheers.

Hi Diane--
I am going through something similar--"No one in my family ever had it, I
don't smoke, I don't take hormones, why did this happen to me?"
At 4 a.m. you can't pick up the phone and call a friend or family member,
but do it as soon as you can.  Ask them about *their* life.  You will feel
like you are still a part of the world, and you will know that others care
about you, and this will make you feel much better for a while.  At least it
works for me.
The only thing is, when people tell you "You have to have a positive
attitude!" take it with a grain of salt.  No, you don't *have* to have a
positive attitude 24/7.  You don't have to be a cockeyed optimist.  What you
do have to do is learn all you can about the disease and its treatment so
that you can make the decisions that will help you survive and be healthy.
All the best, Eva

so true.
it used to bug the * out of me when people said that to me.

a positive attitude will help you a great deal, but nobody can  be positive
24/7.  it would be weird and unhealthy.
yes, we are still normal people with the inherent normal range of emotions.
that's what living is, yes?

Hi Diane,

Try to find out if your area has a breast cancer support group of any
kind.  The oncologist's office might know, or the onc.dept. of your
hospital, or even the phone book.  They may have someone you can talk
to right away, who has already been through this.

My hospital is trying to get funding to hire someone who will offer
support to  anyone with breast cancer just as soon as they are
diagnosed, even on a Sunday.

That would have been a help to me. I was alone, and given four days to
decide between a lumpectomy and mastectomy. I spent the whole four
days crying and thinking I was going to die.

I'm fine now, after 2.5 years. I even have some good memories about
the whole thing.  The radiation treatment is nothing to worry about.
It doesn't hurt. Most people have no after-effects at all, some have
something like a sunburn. You will meet nice people and caring staff.

In some areas (in the U.S.), the American Cancer Society has a program
called "Reach to Recovery", where those newly-diagnosed with breast
cancer can ask to be matched with a trained volunteer who is a breast
cancer survivor.  Where this program exists, it can be very helpful, too.

Diane, I know this message is a little late as you had posted on Oct 21.  Hope
you are doing better.  I know how you feel.  I've been fighting this disease
for 5 years and have been in treatment of some kind all those five years with
the exception of about 18 months.  It wears you down emotionally and physically
and you wonder if you can make it to the triumphant day when your doctor says
there is no sign of disease.

There are people you don't even know who pray for your healing and for strength
to come your way.  Believe that you can make it through the roughest times.  Do
you have a strong spiritual faith?  Just hold on to that faith, knowing there
is something greater and higher than us who is in control, and that strength is
handed down to us.  Remember all the knowledge your doctors and other treatment
folks have and how much they want to help you get well.  Alwqays put your arms
around someone you love when the days are too difficult to bear alone.  Love
and sharing can help heal the fear.
