My mother has been taking hormone shots for her recurring breast cancer since
April.   The shots are given in the hindend.  About four hours after she had
this month's shot, she was in tremendous pain--her hip and leg.  THe cheek is
swollen, hot and hard to the touch.  She went to her oncologist and he couldn't
figure it out and sent her for xrays and sonogram.  Tomorrow she has an MRI as
everything was negative.  SHe's still in pain but has some pain pills that are
helping.  Does anyone know what is going on?  Thanks so much.

Immune reaction to the drug?  Seems unlikely after so many shots, unless
this shot was somehow different.
Infection seems more likely.  Failure of aseptic regime somehow?
I am sure the doctors are just as keen to find out what is going on, and
doing their best.

I thought that injections in the backside weren't done any more because of
the risk of damage to nerves.

i was getting the same shots for some time - lupron i would guess it is...
that's what they gave me to stop ovary function.  i had a shot in the butt
every month.  they would mix the stuff right before injection as it
solidifies quickly.  it is injected into the muscle and then congeals i
guess for time release function.  i had some sore spots and mild swelling on
occasion, but it usually went away in a week or so.
there is one problem i had a few months back - they somehow messed up the
lupron and i got a bad shot.  it wasn't until 2 months later that my onc
told me about it.  i had noticed that my hot flashes had subsided during
that month and came back after the next injection.  he told me several of
his patients said the same thing and they figured out that they "got a bad
batch of lupron".  i changed oncologists after that.  it was the last straw
in a long line of problems i had with them.
fortunately i found another onc who is fantastic.
long story short, i now get an implant in my belly of zoladex which performs
the same function but i only get it every 3 months instead of monthly.  it
hurts a bit more, but it's not as often.  so far so good.
i hope they figure out what the problem is and make sure it doesn't happen
again.
good luck.

So sorry to hear of the discomfort and difficulty that your mom is having.  I
had something somewhat similar.  I take regular (every other night)
subcutaneous injections of interferon beta for M.S. (multiple sclerosis)
primarily on my buttocks.  Several months ago I developed an area similar to
what you describe.  My oncologist had me see a dermatologist.  Both suggested
that I had developed  probable cellulitis to that area.  I was put on the
antibiotic, Keflex, and it cleared up.
