Hello,
On October 3rd, I am going to be in the "Run for the Cure" walk/run for breast cancer.
My goal is to raise at least $1500 for this cause. Please donate as much as you can possibly afford for this great cause.
I will accept payment in the form of Money Order only as this is for charity.
Almost everyone I know, knows someone with this dreaded disease. Be it their friend, mother, sister, aunt, daughter, grandmother and in some cases it may be a man in their life.
Please help if you can.
I must have your donation in my possession by Sept. 30th.
If you would like to donate please e-mail me with Cancer as the subject. I will give you my mailing address through this link.<email=tshaver@cogeco.ca> Email me here </email>
Thanks for reading this and for any donations you can make.
Remember the research we fund today could save the life of someone you love tomorrow.
All Money Orders should be made out to: Canadian Breast Cancer Fund
If you are in Canada, cheques are fine, also payable to: Canadian Breast Cancer Fund.
Please DO NOT make any cheques out to me personnally.

I don't think the ng is a good place to solicit donations. I give only either through people I know or to organizations which I'm familiar with. A Google search of Canadian Breast Cancer Fund didn't get a hit. Surely you have enough friends/acquaintances/neighbors/colleagues to raise a modest amount like $1500?
Terry - 19 Aug 2004 19:15 GMT
Try Run for the Cure as a search. You don't have to donate if you do not wish to. I also at my expense have put up an auction on both ebay.ca and ebay.com. I am not here as a scam artist but as someone who just found out their boss's wife has breast cancer. Again check run for the cure or rune for the cure canada. one of these should provide info on this cause. BUT I do understand your apprehension there are a lot of people that would take advantage of the generosity of people. That is why I specifically asked that no money orders or cheques are made out to me personnally. Also why I followed up with my second post as to the income tax receipt for Canadians, I do not know the tax laws for the US and don't know if this qualifies A) in the US at all and, B) being a Canadian charity.
Please make up your own mind about donationd, and if you do know a better place to ask people to care please reply here with that info.
P.S. Sorry for the top post but thought that this was important.

The real name of the organization for Run for the Cure is the Canadian
Breast Cancer Foundation. That's where my cheques go. I don't believe
there is a Canadian Breast Cancer Fund, unless privately set up.

Actually you are correct. I did not have my pledge sheet in front of me at
the time of writing. It is the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. However
I also accept Anthony's point as not to ask for donations from a news group.
The only reason I did this is because so many people at work are also
"running" for the cure. And other than work, I don't really socialize. I
am usually at home with my 22 month old. Sorry to have bothered anyone
here. Please keep up the good work in your own fight for the cure.
Again Sorry I won't bother the group anymore.
P.S In case anyone was wondering, so far I've raised $75 and feel
disappointed in myself for not accomplishing my goal. My new goal is
drasticcally reduced to $125.
Have a good night.....Terry

Please do come back and let us know how you get on with reaching your
goal.
We are a -news- group, while soliciting donations does not exactly
classify as news, any achievement in that respect certainly does.
It would be unrealistic to expect those of us with minimalist social
lives to achieve the same as networking office dwellers. That does
not make the achievement any less valuable.
I was particularly touched by the letter I got from the Christie
cancer hospital (Manchester, UK) after we raised money for them at my
wife's funeral, in lieu of flowers. It was only about 400 UK pounds,
but they sent us a very respectful letter that made us feel that we
had made a significant and worthwhile contribution to their appeal for
(I think) 20 million.

The people in this ng are *already* doing all they can to fight
cancer. There's only a slim chance that they have kept back
some extra money to support your efforts.
You'd have better luck if you direct your appeal to those people
who are NOT yet aware of the problems of cancer.
