I hope I'm not out of line posting this here.  Two days ago, I received a
very lovely fruit basket with a get-well card from my boyfriend's mother and
sister, both of whom I barely know.  Unfortunately right now I am *so damn
sick* from chemo that I cannot eat a single bite of it and won't be able to
in the foreseeable future.  I am trying to compose a nice thank-you note
*that will not sound insincere*, but I cannot get beyond "Dear L. and J.,
thank you so much for the lovely fruit basket and for your good wishes."
Can someone give me another sentence or two, please?  I desperately don't
want to offend these folks.

Much obliged for any suggestions!  Eva

Ugh,

Thank you so much for the lovely fruit basket and for your good wishes.
This treatment has been difficult and it helps to know that you are
thinking about me.

in the meantime, at least you have some nice fruit to offer visitors! On
a related note, are you taking any Zofran? It is much better than
Compazine if you are having bad nausea. Your nausea should be able to be
controlled better than this.

... I am truly touched that you are thinking of me in this difficult time.
I look forward to getting to know you better in the near future.

In the meantime, thank you once again, all my love

Eva,

I wouldn't let them know you can't eat the fruit because then they'd feel
bad.  Your first sentence is fine.  Maybe you could add something like:

"To know I'm not alone and that you're thinking of me helps more than you
know."

or:

"Your gift lifted my spirits.  Chemo isn't any fun, but it's easier, knowing
there are thoughtful people like you who are thinking of me and wishing me
well."

Good luck with the chemo.  I know what you mean about appetite.  There was
time during my own chemo that I could get nothing down except Ensure.

Thanks Shirley, Chris, and Maria for your terrific suggestions.  I was so
focused on my own misery and the bitter irony of the beautiful fruit I can't
eat, that I couldn't see what you all saw, that it was their *kindness and
caring* I should be grateful for, not the material gift.

Chris, I do take Zofran, and it's quite effective in preventing actual
vomiting, but doesn't seem to affect the feelings of revulsion, the
alteration in my senses of smell and taste that make everything taste
spoiled, or the feeling of being overly full after eating only a small
amount.

What's preventing me from eating right now, though, is a new siege of these
mouth sores, which make chewing, swallowing, or even holding food in my
mouth very painful.  Basically all I can eat is stuff like yogurt,
applesauce, and overcooked noodles.  Hopefully they'll be gone in a few more
days, like they were after the last cycle.

Only one more round of A&C to go, thank God!  Then it's on to the unknown
horrors of Taxotere and Herceptin.

Glad to be helpful. What terrible symptoms you are having. I am glad
Zofran is helping a little, although it certainly has helped other
people a whole lot more. I have heard people mention Kytril, but never
bothered to find out about it because Zofran does great by me. Maybe
that would be something to look into. Hang in there! The good thing
about changing chemos is that you will get a whole different set of
symptoms, although I think much less nausea.

Perhaps you could bear to cut up the fruit and put it in a container covered
with gin, vodka, brandy or some other spirit. Then you'll be able to enjoy
it later. It's a dreadful waste of a kind gift and the fruit itself to dump
it.

I hope your nausea doesn't last long.

Hugs,

Mary

Oh, I won't dump it.  I'm sharing it with my friends and neighbors.  I won't
be allowed alcohol until I'm done with chemo which will be another few
months.  Nice idea, though!
