What's the best coping strategy for these mouth sores? I can barely
swallow. Brushing my teeth is torture.
I am already taking Augmentin for the sore throat I developed, but it's not
helping the mouth sores. Thanks Eva

Mouth sores could be caused by virus, bacteria, fungus ( thrush). The
thrush as a white coating and your doctor would prescribe an antifungal.
For the sore mouth viscous lidocaine - you would need a prescription numbs
the pain.

I suspect you have had a round of A/C..The only way I could live with my
mouth sores was to carry a vial of Lidocaine and apply it every 5
minutes or so. Try not to talk and DON'T eat a baked potato with lots of
butter and sour cream until it is almost liquid. It will still feel like
it is made of sand...Drink lots of malts and other liquid..AND pray for
the end of your A/C treatments...Pat from Apple Valley, CA

Two rounds of A/C, actually. Do you mean this is going to continue until I
am finished with all 8 rounds? Oh, God! I can't chew *anything*! I'm
living on yogurt, applesauce, and meatballs drowned in tomato sauce.

Eva, I am guessing that you will only have 4 rounds of AC. Mouth sores should
heal after that. Tomato sauce is quite acidic and may actually exacerbate the
problem. Try eating things that are more bland.

My oncologist said to rinse with salt and water if I developed sores.
It's a shame you have to have mouth problems on top of the chemo.

My approach is a little radical - I used silver nitrate sticks and burned them
off - yes, it's painful for five mintues, but I'd rather have 5 min of pain
than weeks of pain with mouth sores that won't go away.

chemical substance that burns or destroys living tissue
Also, here is a site with various remedies for canker sores including silver
nitrate:

Two of the remedies are things I have in the house:
1) Tea tree oil
2) Hydrogen peroxide + glycerin
I'll try them. Thanks for the lead!

My wife was prescribed a mouth wash called Nystatin that helped a lot with a
sore mouth when she was having Taxotere.

Children with trench mouth often get some relief from rinsing with white
Karo syrup. I have no idea if it would help in this setting.

You know, I actually did have trench mouth once--many years ago, when I was
pregnant. It wasn't like this, though.

Eva,
Before do anything, call your doctor, thrush ( which nystatin is the
medicine) is very common with people on chemo.
It could be viral and there are meds for that. The lidocaine I mentioned
doesn't treat anything but will make your throat feel better. Silver nitrate
is similar to the white stick you buy when you nick you legs shaving/
Salt water is pretty tame to use and will do no harm.
Wishing that you mouth feels better soon.

Hi Eva--you might go to a health foods store and tr some drinkable/edible aloe
vera gel or juice. That can help heal them. You might also contact your
dentist. There is a product made by a company called Oxyfresh that is a
numbing gel which can help make it feel better. That is generally sold through
dental offices but you can also order it on-line, if interested. Try doing a
google search. If you can't find it and would like more info, let me know and
I can check my files. Take care and feel better. {{{Hugs}}}

Eva:
1.) Rembrandt Toothpaste for Canker Sore Sufferers - no kidding! I use it all
the time and it keeps little sores from getting bigger.
2.) Gargle with (don't swallow) Maalox as needed. It coats the sores and
makes it feel better
3.) Aspirin or any other OTC pain reliever every 4-6 hours.
I've had canker sores my whole life. Nothing that the doctor or dentist
prescribes works. Topical ointment takes the pain away for about 20 minutes
but make them worse in the long run. The toothpaste by Rembrandt has been a
god send.
By the way, while I got sores during chemo, they weren't any worse than normal.
I attribute this to the toothpaste.

Thanks. I'm not allowed to take aspirin during this course of chemo. I
have been taking acetominophen. I will definitely look for the toothpaste,
because brushing my teeth is *very* painful.
The sores have actually abated by now, not sure whether this is spontaneous
or whether it's from all the different remedies I've been trying. Anyhow
I'm grateful.
However my next chemo treatment is later today, so I'm sure they'll be back
again.

>I kid you not! I feel soooo sorry for you and hope the treatments go by swiftly. I had them so bad, I often said I would have rather had the nausea and vomiting. I would have been more comfortable..Tho, I really didn't lose any weight, Which you would think would be a by-product of the sores. They are not anywhere close to a cankor sore, Don't even compair..I tried differend toothpastes and got the softest toothbrush I could find. A baby toothbrush to be exact..Had Magic Mouthwash. Gag!!! Drink lots try malts and shakes smoothies Gateraid. Hope y ou get over them soon....apt from Apple Valley, CA
