Hey,
My mum has just had a biopsy that seems likely to confirm BC, and wants
to think ahead to mastectomy. In the UK how does one go about getting info
regarding specialist surgeons, rather than the general surgeon she has
already met.
Any other directions to helpful resources would be very much
appreciated,(already found www.cancerbacup.org.uk )
Thanks
Mark

The recommendation for bc treatment in the UK is that all patients should be
under the care of a team of specialists and specialist nurses based in one
of the major regional cancer centres (but running clinics e.g. weekly in
your local hospital). I'm sure CancerBacup has info on this, if you phone
them. It is primarily up to your GP to refer you. Once you are assigned to
a team, your primary point of contact should be (at least in theory) the
team's breast care nurse.
In my wife's case she was seen at Burnley Hospital by specialists from the
Christie Hospital (Manchester). When her disease became advanced she
transferred to the Christie.
