pulmicort overdose?

hi.

I am using Pulmicort for my brochitis, two times a day (200 dose). My
doctor says that an overdose is not possible, however I am just
getting the idea that more use does not end up in reducing the
problem. In fact, I think just the opposite, there is an increase of
short of breath. Has anybody experience with a too high dose of
Pulmicort?

regards, Dick.

I am very sligtly asthmatic and predisposed to bad chest infections. My
doctor insisted that I go on Pulmicort (200mic twice day)twice a day. For
the first few months it seemed to improve the asthma with no side effects.
Then my voice went hoarse, I had problems breathing and in another week I
noticed problems in my breathing. My doctor reckoned I needed to up the
dose. The problem got worse when the dose was upped.  Eventually I was on
800 mic a day.  At that point I sopped taking, it over night, this after
having been on it for 8 weeks at a high dose. I was afraid of the
consequences of sudden stoppage.... but nothing happened except for an ache
in my joints that lasted for 3 days. Overall. I felt brilliant.  Over the
following year I tried to go back on the Pulmicort but found that using it
for 3-4 days concurrently will restrict my breathing.  However, I found that
taking it as a 1 one medicne seems to have some help without any side
effects.  Now, when I feel that I am on the verge of a chest infection, or
that my asthma might be about to get worse, I take 6 * 100mic of the
Pulmicort for 2 consequtive days, and it works wonders without any side
effcets. This approach was reluctantly accepted by by doctor. It would not
work for people with continuous bad asthsma but could help people like
yourself.

Good for you,Sims!  You're using your head.

The more you learn, the more you'll be able to tinker with your
condition.   With a little luck thrown in your disease may never
progress.

You can be your own best doctor when you bother  to gather the
information.

lot of Pulmicort)

Hi Sims,

Thanks for your reply.

I did the same thing as you, stopped overnight. What struck me in your
reply was the part about the ache in your joints. The same happened to
me, except it was concentrated in my knees. Ache in my knees is not
new to me, however this was different and at the time I could not
place it. I did not do anything to cause it. Perhaps it is
coincedence, but your reply made me think.
I am using Salbutamol as well and since I stopped taking the
Pulmicort, the use is down to 25%! Before I stopped, I had to inhale
every morning at least 2 times and even then the short of breath was
not gone totally. Now I wake up with no problems at all, or very
slightly.
When I consulted  my doctor I got same advise as you did, 'increase
the dose'. But I found  my bronchitis to get worse.
About two years ago I tried to use it a bit in the same way you are. I
used a smaller dose though. At the time I thought it worked. After
consulting my doctor, she told me this could not work because this a
long term medicine. I talked about this later on with her some more,
but she was persistent in her opinion. So what will you do with such a
remark? She is the expert, you think. And she is possibly right for
most of the users.
For now, I am going to try this too and will experiment with the dose
when the time comes when I need it.

Thanks again, Dick.

Hi,

Glad to get the response from you. My doctor was so insistant about the
importance of continuing the dose (even increasing it) that I had begun to
think I was an idiot to question him. You seem to know what I meant about
the knee joint pain, I have had three cartilage operations and experienced
all sorts of pains as a result of these injurieut , but what struck me was
the strangeness off the new pain, it felt really deep inside the joints and
a bit like flu plus pinched nerves.  As for the Salbutamol, what can I say,
I was gob smacked to find that  now I don't take it more than once or twice
a month, instead of every day.
My doctor refuses to beleive that my new way of taking the steroid works
better as he insists it needs continuous use and at least 5 days before I
feel any benefits!
It has made me question the integrity/intelligence of my doctor, it also
frightens me that there may be tens of thousands of people out there who are
in the same position as you and I.
NOTE TO OTHERS:Stopping steroids suddenly is theoretically a dangerous move,
don't assume that Dicks and my experiences with steroids apply to everyone.
