My doctor gave me a sample of  Spiriva HandiHaler by Pfizer (tiotropium
bromide inhalation powder) to try instead of Adwar 100/50 (2 puffs a day).
My "moderate" asthma is presently under control, so I am eager  to try it to
get away from steroids. I also take a Singular pill every evening. Does
anyone  here has any experience as to how effective it is and knows of any
side effects?
Thanks a lot,
FJV

my dr gave me samples a few weeks ago when my chronic asthma went out of
control.  I use it along with singulair and advair 250/5 twice a day.  I
have not noticed any side effects... but I have noticed an improvement in my
asthma... and it staying under control.....

"instead of Advair"?

That doesn't seem right, if Advair has your symptoms pretty much under
control.

I've been using Spiriva for several months and am really appy with it.
For me it's better than Atrovent, the drug it replaced.
I'm really happy with it.

Atrovent is a similar drug to Spiriva, the generic names being
tiotropium and ipratropium.  Both sucessors to atropine (belladonna) an
ancient medicament.

But the principal drug in Advair is a steroid, fluticasone.  If you stop
using it, quite  likely your symptoms will return.  In spite of the
Spiriva.

What do you think, CBI?

Actually, Advair is a combo of Serevent (salmeterol) and Flovent
(fluticasone).  Some people using Serevent are actually finding that
their asthma is getting worse as was my case - I was using Serevent and
Pulmicort.  This past summer I was switched to Spiriva along with
Pulmicort and cannot believe the difference in my breathing.

To answer the original post, I have found it to be very effective -
much more so than Serevent - with the only noticable side effect being
dry mouth.  This can be somewhat alleviated by rinsing after using the
Spiriva.

Best of luck and Happy "wheeze free" Holidays!

Spiriva is used to treat COPD, not Asthma... perhaps you don't have Asthma....
a lot of people are being treated for Asthma when in fact they have COPD
instead... an awful lot of MDs, especially pulmonologists, are charlatans.

The "Handihaler" (Spiriva, Advair) is a much more complicated
contraption than the "Turbuhaler" (Pulmicort).

To get the powder out of the Handihaler and into my lungs I really have
to draw hard,  Suck power, hmm.  Glad I can do it but wonder whether
someone more frail and debilitated might not be able to do so.

The Turbuhaler is more simple and easier to inhale from.   If you will
take off the part that touches your lips, put on your reading glasses,
and peer into the hole, you'll see how it works.

I'm sure Turbuhaler is patented.  It's Astra-Zenica's
ace-in-the-hole.---Jack
