I'm approaching 50 and, until I started taking steroids for my asthma
and allergies (Advair and Nasonex), my hair hadn't thinned at all. A
few years on those drugs and my hair was getting thinner but not in a
pattern typical of "male pattern baldness". To make a long story
shorter, I've cut back on my steroids and my hair is coming back as
well.
Any studies either support or go against what I've experienced? I was
frankly quite surprised to see my hair thinning because I come from a
family in which this doesn't happen much, i.e., my mother's father and
other older men in the family have gone to their graves at ripe old ages
with full heads of hair. And, I confess, I was equally surprised to
find the condition reversing itself when I cut back on Advair because I
didn't think such a low doseage could possibly have that effect.
Anyway, I'm curious to hear what others think on this subject - more
details as requested.
Thanks in advance.

May have nothing to do with your meds, could be male menopause. When
testosterone levels change all sorts of oddities can occur, both physical and
emotional. Once hormonal levels settle down normalcy usually returns.
Consider yourself lucky it was only the loss of hair, could have just as well
been excessive hair growth, you'd probably be more concerned had you ended up
like a Halloween werewolf.

Steve, I think it takes long term or high dose steroids to lose hair but
that doesn't mean it can't happen. I was on prednisone for two years
straight and lost my hair. After tapering off my hair came back. This last
burst has been for six months and my hair is thinning but luckily I have
some to spare. Let us know what you find out. Trudy.

What steroid(s) is Steve taking? I have been using Pulmacort for ten
years now, will be 70 in January and have a full head of hair. Inhaled
steroids rather than oral have much fewer side effects.

I am as surprised as anyone else, but the connection seems pretty clear
to me. As I think I mentioned, for a few years I've been taking Advair,
at first 100/50 2x/day, then 250/50 2x/day, and then 250/50 AM and
100/50 PM. I've weaned myself off the stuff almost entirely now and
feel just fine. I'd say I'm down to 100/50 maybe twice a week or so.
Other meds, which I've tried cutting back on but cannot, are Allegra
180mg 1x/day and Singulair 10mg 1x/day.
The other steroid I take/took was Nasonex. I never took it at the
package-recommended dose of 2 sprays per nostril per day, just 1 spray
per nostril per day. Then I switched to every other day with good
results, and now I'm at every third or fourth day.
