Periodically Switching Antihistamines

I use Allegra every day but in the past have also gotten pretty good
relief from Zyrtec.  I've also noticed that sometimes there is something
in the air for a week or two that Allegra doesn't seem to handle very
well.

After mentioning all this to my doctor he suggested switching to Zyrtec
once in a while because the literal suggests that one's body might
respond better to Allegra if periodically given a break from it.  (I
don't know if this is true for all antihistamines or just Allegra.)

Is there a standard protocol for doing such a thing, e.g., use another
medicine for 2 weeks every 6 months?  I tried being off Allegra once for
a week - I had to because of then-pending allergy test - and was pretty
miserable.  I don't think going with no antihistamine for any length of
time is best for me unless there's a compelling reason.  (I have severe
allergies to several very common things - dust mites, mold, grass among
others - and do very well in a HEPA-filtered environment but go to
client sites pretty regularly so I'm in unfiltered air for 8-16 hours
per day sometimes.)

Thanks in advance.

What would be wrong with changing about every three months, there's Claritin
also.

Zyrtec (cetirizine HCl 5-mg and 10mg)

Allegra (fexofenadine HCl 60 mg)

Claritin ????

My doctor didn't suggest changing antihistamines from one to another
periodically, just using an alternative antihistamine for a short period
of time.  I am one of those who get little, if any, relief from
Claritin.  (I believe about 50% of those who try it fall into this
category.)  Zyrtec, while it does work pretty well on my allergy
symptoms, makes me sleepy so I have split it in half and take half every
12 hours and, even then, it _still_ makes me sleepy, so Allegra is
definitely the medicine of choice for me.

I'm just curious to know if any research has been done on this subject -
I guess not.

and also Clarinex.  I used Zyrtec before, but my new insurance doesn't
cover it, but does cover Claritin.

If you're anywhere near the Canadian border, generic Claritin, generic
Zyrtec (Reactine here) and I'm quite sure generic Allegra are available,
cheap, at Wal-Marts.

I'm, unfortunately, not anywhere NEAR the Canadian border.  :(  I'm in
northeastern NC.  We have the generic claritin at the WallyWorld here,
but not the generic Zyrtec or Allegra.  But, I will be switching
insurance providers at the first of the year (Hilton Corporations
decision), so I will wait until then to see what haqppens.

Allegra and Zyrtec are not available as generics in the US - only Claritin
(and its generic brand - Alavert).

When I was in the US I saw a bunch of Zyrtec commercials and something I
heard in one or maybe saw online creeped me out, it sounded like it was a
new product, and not like something I'd want to take.

Then several months later I noticed that what I thought was my generic
Allegra that I'd taken on occasion was actually cetirizine...Zyrtec, aka
Reactine.  Nothing wrong with it, then, I guess.  <weg>

That's what I was trying to say.
