Portable HEPA filters

I've been taking a HEPA filter big enough to do an entire floor of my
(admittedly small) house with me when I travel - takes up almost an
entire large suitcase.

I'm considering this one - any comments on either the air cleaner
itself, which lots of places seem to sell, or this vendor in particular?
I just want something that's at least better than nothing, will do a
half-decent job at giving me cleaner air to breath in my hotel, and
won't require its own large suitcase to carry.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Steve;

They're not a bad little machine; I sell 'em at my shop also.  However, I
noticed on the cited website that the seller didn't mention the airflows.
Be aware that it's a 2-speed machine.  Low speed is 20 c.f.m., and high
speed is 40 c.f.m.  Not much airflow, and what airflow there is comes out
omnidirectional through that little band around the machine between the
power switch near the bottom, and the Amaircare logo.

It does have a nice big HEPA filter, relative to the size of the machine.
But don't count on it for chemical, odour, or gas removal.  The "Stage 3 VOC
Filter" in this thing is minimal, and won't be of any help after a couple of
hours running.

Like I tell my customers, it certainly won't do much for a bedroom, but if
you're travelling, and you can put it on a night table right beside your
bed, it may be of some help.

It does have a couple of positive things going for it, though.  It runs on a
12-volt motor, so you can get an adapter to plug it into your vehicle's
cigarette lighter when driving.  Also, it's almost all-metal; the base, the
fan, and the top and bottom caps on the HEPA filter.  It can come apart to
some extent if you want to pack it up; the HEPA filter will pull off the
base easily enough.  See that line running around the machine just above the
Amaircare logo?  Everything north of there is the HEPA filter, which will
just lift off with a little upward prying.  There are 3 or 4 little plugs on
the bottom of the HEPA filter which mate up with holes on the top of the
base.

In short, it's okay for particle removal either in a very, very, small area,
or if it's practically right beside your pillow.  Definitely not a good
choice for chemical problems.  Good luck.

Garth Allen.
