I tried it and was not impressed except by the price. I now dissolve the
powder from two 25 mg. capsules of a generic Benadryl (the original
antihistamine, now OTC) in a small amount of hot water, put it in the
Astelin spray bottle, fill with water and use that. For me, it gives relief
from mild stuffiness. I don't imagine it would help much with a severe
condition.
I think it was Murray Grossan (sp?) who advanced the idea on this NG several
years ago.

That is an interesting solution. Glad it works for you and i will keep it in
mind.
One that i found to be very effective was Primatene Mist -- inhaled and then
exhaled through the nose. It was less than stellar as a bronchodilator, but
turned out to be surprisingly good as a decongestant.
I had gone to the Dr in the sixties and been told that I had chronic catarrh
and then I went again in the 90s and was basically told to learn to live
with it. I have since I am not yet writing from the beyond, and have a lot
of experience <G> with decongestants. When I use the stronger *supposed* 12
hour decongestant sprays on a regular basis i have problems with
reingorgement which was just a word until I experienced it. I had always
liked Dristan Menthol Spray (not the 12 hour variety) but it no longer seems
to be available.
To me, Benadryl and it's generics could double as a sleeping pill but one
thing I have noticed is that 30 minutes after taking it by mouth my sinuses
have been amazingly clear.

Here's the recipe from Grossan:
"Azelastine HCl (Astelin) is an antihistamine in spray form. This
drug is excellent when steroid sprays are contraindicated. Many
patients dislike the taste. A solution of Benadryl 25 mg added
to one ounce of Locke-Ringer or sodium chloride solution can be
made and yields similar results. The dose of the Benadryl must
be titrated to the individual patient. " Link:

All,
Thanks for your feedback on Astelin and the related treatments with other
antihistamine nasal sprays. I've saved the link from Ellis and will read it
shortly.
Actually, none of the prescribed meds or 1-1/2 years of allergy shots have
really improved anything. The surgery removed obstructions to help
breathing, but a sinus infection is continually present. Antibiotics knock
it out for a short period, but it always returns.
Thanks,
Mike
