It all started 4 years ago. In about April of 2001, I began having
difficulty breathing one morning. It was really bad, and lasted for
about 2 months. Many trips to doctors, pulmonary experts, and
emergency rooms couldn't diagnose my condition. It has never been
that bad since, but has come back in varying intensities every March
or April or so. The only symptoms are trouble breathing (can't catch
a breath), and tightness in the chest. I don't cough, and I don't
wheeze (as far as I can tell). If this is in fact allergy induced
asthma, what treatments are available, as I have been without
treatment for 4 years. Thanks!

It does sound allergy related.
I would ask your doctor about a preventaive inhaler. You may only need
it during the spring months. And also a rescue inhaler in case you
have a bad episode. You may not need it more than a couple times a
year, but it would be helpful to have if you do have an episode.

Sure sounds like asthma triggered by spring pollens. Meghan's advice
sounds right on target to me, too. There is a possibility you will
start reacting to other substances, too, so perhaps you could avoid
getting worse by taking some preventive steps in the spring.

Thanks for the advice Meghana and Zane. It is about time I see a
doctor about this. It is reassuring that the two of you agree with my
self diagnosis. I am relieved that a pattern developed to help me
figure out this mess.

I finally went to an allergist to see if anything was available to help
cope with
my April / May breathing problems and the extreme fatigue they brought.
He diagnosed mild to moderate, allergic asthma and has ordered all the
tests to see if there are other triggers for me.
Bet there are a lot of people who think they just get lazy in the spring.

I hope you post back with your findings. I have, for as long as I can
remember, had episodes of shortness of breath or the feeling I wasn't
able to fill my lungs all the way. It use to last a few days or so.
But, about 3 years ago I got the same thing only it lasted for weeks.
That was in the spring and then in the fall I got it as well and it
lasted for 2 months maybe a little more. Then this spring for about a
month now I have it again. I have been watching weather.com allergy
reports in hopes of finding a correlation between the onset of this
episode and some allergen.
So far I think it's either mold or grass pollen, or maybe both. It
stresses me out not knowing what is wrong.

Don't rule out tree pollen.
A common source of trouble thru April and May in some areas.
The simple forearm scratch test can show which pollens are tripping your symptoms.

Thanks I won't, I'm just basing it off of the allergy reports from
weather.com. They show no tree pollen in the closest area too me which
is 4 hours away.
Does anyone else have the same syptoms as this and been diagnosed?
From the definitions I read on asthma I don't fit into their
definition. I haven't had a single short eppisode, it always lasts for
a long time and is usually about the same the whole time. Then it
clears up for a year or more and then comes back.

I have allergies and asthma. I can have an ongoing allergy attack that
makes my asthma worse or more sensistive, but doesn't actually set off
an asthma attack (breathing out of control). I can feel my lung
capacity go down, and I'm more "aware" of my breathing. Sometimes,
I'll have a cough or a sore throat to go with it. Also, when I have
this problem, I cannot lay down flat. I will feel pressure in my lungs
and have to cough. So I will sleep propped up.
I can go days or weeks like this and not have an actual asthma
breathing attack. I do know that I can easily set one off by adding a
trigger, so I am very careful during those times.
It is quite possible that you are have asthma problems without a full
breathing attack. In fact, I went over 2 years without using my
inhaler, and went to the doctor for a bad cold. She was more concerned
about my asthma than my cold. I was surprised about that, but two days
later, the cold was completely gone, and the rest of my symptoms all
felt like typical asthma. I just hadn't recognized them because of the
cold.
Also, my asthma does get worse in spring when all the allergens go
crazy.

You have described my condition exactly.
