Beware of Primatene. It has caused problems in many people. I tried
the pill once. I couldn't sit still for a day and ahalf. My heart was
racing, and I was still having asthma attacks. I took in the morning,
before walking to school (2 miles). I had 3 asthma attacks along the
way, and by the second class, I could not hold my pen still enough to
take notes, I called my parents to come get me (my legs were shaking,
and I felt weak). I was exhausted, but too wired to sleep.

I never took one again. I heard years later that many people have had
bad reactions to it.

Does the young man have a job yet? Many grocery stores offer health
benefits for part time workers. I only have to work 60 hours a month
to keep my insurance. Currently, I can get my rescue inhaler for only
$3 and my preventaive inhaler for $5. It may change after next month
with our new contract. But in general, the benefits are pretty decent.

I have used Primatene Mist. It's effective. It's popular enough that the
major drug chains (Walgreen's, etc.) have their own house brands of it for
less money.

Better yet, check the foreign pharmacies on the net.  I recently bought 3
Ventolin inhalers from a pharmacy in Thailand for $21 plus $10 shipping. No
prescription needed.

Time for this young man to learn how to "work the system"  .

He probably needs more than Primatene or albuterol, which do no more
than (albeit miraculously sometimes)  relieve the symptoms.

It's ok to run to county hospitals and talk to social workers when  this
young man's ongoing health is concerned.

I was born in the depths of that great depression of the l930's with a
cardiac anomaly and my dear mother dragged me to clinics until 1949 when
a new operation was developed for my condition  and subsequently
preformed on me.

Even at that point my father was able to pay only a hundred dollars,
which would be like twenty-five hundred today.  (But certainly only a
piddle compared to what the operation cost.)

Your life is precious.  Don' be ashamed to ask for help.

I don't have insurance neither.
We have clinics here with our own phamarcy.
Pay $12 to see doctor.
and pay $3 for prescription
the over the counter medicine worked for me till my condition worsened
I would think you would have a clinic there too.

HUGS!!!

If the person you are speaking about has no insurance, he should look into
Medicaid.  I'm assuming that he has a low income if he can't pay out of pocket
for inhalers.  You can apply for Medicaid at a local Medicaid office, or go to
a city hospital and the social workers there will get you started.  You DONT
DONT DONT want to use anything over the counter, it will only make it worse.
If he needs something for wheezing, he also needs something to prevent the
wheeze.  Preventative medications are as important as rescue medications.
Please get this gentleman to a doctor or hospital and get him the help he
needs.  Jack Mallory was right - don't be ashamed to ask for help!

I agree with Jack --- find help somewhere.  A good place to start is
with your city or county health department clinic.
