Just diagnosed with Asthma and started Advair

I've read in this list what I can find on Advair and haven't found an answer
to my question.

I was diagnosed with Asthma a few days  ago while taking my annual physical.
Oddly, I had no complaints about breathing problems.

The doctor did a breathing test, then a treatment, and another test.  On the
second test, I scored 15% better, and he diagnosed it as Asthma.  He put me
on Advair 250/50 twice daily.  Since starting his, my throat is raw, and it
actually hurts somewhat to take a deep breath.  This is interesting since I
had no problems prior to being diagnosed.

I'm just curious if anyone else has had similar problems.

Thx . . .

The sore throat is a known side-effect of Advair. Your doctor should
have warned you about it, Mine did. Read the instructions. They instruct
the user to rinse the mouth without swallowing after each use. I also
make it a point to take several sips of something in order to rinse the
back of the throat.

My brother had to stop using Advair because of this, but I've had no
problems, and it works much better than anything else I've used over the
years.

What I've got is a sample from the doctor and got no instructions -- well,
no printed instructions.  The nurse walked me through how to use it but
didn't mention the sore throat problem.  I do drink some water after using
it.  I'll try rinsing next time.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm curious about why he did a breathing test if you really
had no symptoms.

I have seem some people use variability as low as 10% as the
positive cut off. However, most official guidelines and
practitioners use 20%. The diagnosis if asthma uses several
factors including history and physical exam as well as
laboratory testing. It is possible that the doc had some
other reasons that are not clear from your post but based on
what you have said I have to question the diagnosis. Maybe
you should get a clearer explanation of why he thinks you
have asthma other than this one test (if that is the only
reason then you probably don't have it).

I also wonder why someone with no symptoms needs Advair
since the Serevent portion of it is largely to relieve
symtoms and to spare the dose of steroid (which in your case
is not so high as to need sparing).

As for the sore throat - it is common with inhaler steroids.
Rinsing your mouth should help.

You're echoing my thoughts exactly.  I have mild allergies that bother me at
times, but I've not had any symptoms that made me think I had breathing
difficulties.  He said that he's started doing the breathing test with
annual exams for everyone.

I've considered switching doctors for other reasons that I won't go into
here anyway.  So for now, I've stopped the Advair and plan to get a second
opinion.

Many thanks . . .

That is clearly not appropriate.

Like I said - I may be missing something so I wouldn't do
much based solely on my say so. A second opinion is probably
a good idea.

You're welcome.

Sounds like another general MD who has not clue about treatment of
asthma.  A second or even a third opinion would be my reccomentation
based upon my 25 years of experience.  I would not go to another
general MD and instead go to a specialist in the field dealing with
asthma.
