i've been struggling with dry, extremely swollen nasal passages, all
my efforts directed at keeping some trickle of airflow thru one or
either nostril. been to several md's, ENT's, did all the antibiotics,
prednisone treatments, etc. now it's just down to me, my Flonase, my
saline solution and some Vicks vaporub like stuff.

anyway, the scariest thing i'm experiencing now is that even when i do
have an opening and *should* be able to breathe okay, it seems like my
body doesn't absorb or can't process the air. i suck it in and feel
breathless still. it's this feeling like you just can't take air in.
i've been told it sounds like asthma.

i'm wondering if there is any reasonable over the counter med that
could be used to help this situation until i can get to a doc, get
diagnosed and get something better - which, as you know takes time.
it's sunday, i'm desperate. i'll make an appt tomorrow but it could
drag on and on before i'm able to really get any help via the medicos.

thanks much,

iJah

Have you tried Afrin (or a similar nasal decongestant spray)?

IMO, you should ask for a referral to an ENT.

You sound like me at night. Not only does one nostril close up at night , my
labored breathing affects my heart rate and sleep. This occurs when I am in
traffic during the day or if I eat before bed.I was told I have asthma, I
don't have asthma, I have acid reflux , and well its one long negative story
about which is which. I think I might have nervous stomach and so acide
reflux but . I am not sure why if its acid reflux my nostril closes up.lol
My nostril is dry and I don't have any mucous. This usually does happen
after I eat though , not sure why. I just bought a humifider for my room and
it seems to have worked a bit maybe try getting this . Do you have a good
filter for you heating system? STEVE

Where do you live that there are no hospitals... hospitals are open 24/7... get
yourself to an ER.  Or can't you tear your trolling a.s away from the Super
Bowl... hehe

we have lots of hospitals with emergency rooms that are usually
packed, chaotic, waiting rooms because everyone who stubs a toe,
drinks one two many beers, has a headache or a stiff neck shows up
demanding service and overwhelms the system.

I thought the emergency room was only to  used only as a last resort
in a real *emergency* where you have a problem that absolutely cannot
wait or is severe enough to warrant a lot of concern. A place where
they handle things like strokes, heart attacks, gunshot wounds, car
accident victims, etc. I didn't feel I was at the level of full blown
emergency. Maybe I need to drop the idea that the ER is only for
extreme emergencies. I mean, after all, if you get into trouble on a
Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday around here - there is no where else to
go. We don't have many 24/7 rapid response care centers.

You're actually quite right about the body not being able to process
the air you suck in.

Your basic problem is almost certainly chronic hyperventilation,  a
disorder characterized by breathlessness and low Carbon dioxide from
actually breathing too much.  Carbon dioxide is one of the main agents
that helps release Oxygen from the hemaglobin and into the tissues
where it is needed.  With low baseline CO2 level, your body is not
getting the oxygen it needs.  Paradoxically you need to breathe less
to reverse this problem.  You've actually got more than enough CO2 in
your blood, but instead of it being released it goes off on a wasted
trip back to the lungs.

You can't take pills for that.  You have to retrain your respiratory
center to adapt to higher CO2 levels.

If you don't believe this,  look up the "Bohr effect" in any good
physiology text book.

Take care

Scam alert!

Mr Kolb has be promoting this scam for a while.  He keeps sending his
pitch to new people hoping that the regulars won't warn you.
