Medicare's Future: Whose Side Is AARP On?

Two days ago I sent the following message to AARP (the American Association
for Retired People).  I urge all of you who may be members of this
organization to go to their website and leave a similar message at:

http://www.aarp.org/contactaarp/Articles/a2003-01-28-contact-issuesform.html

This is a large story which concerns you even if you are not a member of
AARP or
a senior citizen (which you will sooner or later become in any case).  I
therefore
urge you to write your Senators and congressmen, perhaps using the URL at
the
end of this message.

I have also added the URLs at the end for some of the recent articles
appearing
in media which led me to send this message:

------------------------------

Dear AARP Officers:

I have been reading articles on the Senate-House Medicare debate since early
in the summer.

Based on the position attributed to AARP in several recent publications,
that you are inclined to support a version of the bill favoring aspects of
privatization (contrary to your policy as stated on your site), I want you
to understand that to the extent that these reports are true, my wife and I
may find it impossible to continue as members of AARP.

I suspect that many other low- and medium-income AARP members may feel the
same.

Sincerely,

Alex Gross

-----------------

If these reports from today's published press are true, they can only mean
that AARP has now abandoned its main constituency and membership, namely
older & retired Americans.

You can judge this issue for yourselves by looking at the following
articles, first from today's Washington Post::

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A38377-2003Nov13.html

and also from the following UPI piece:

http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20031112-011330-7210r

And yesterday's NY Times contained the following article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/11/14/opinion/14KRUG.html

Politics may well be the art of the possible, and compromise may also play
an
important role in successful politics, but the people being compromised by
AARP's position are in fact none other than their own members.

You can contact your Representative or Senator from:

FYI, this is an asthma support group - not a politics group.

Go spam somewhere else.

Excuse me, Sir, but not everything you happen to dislike is "spam."

I have functioned as a serious & well-regarded author over the past 40
years, as you could have discovered by looking me up on Google.  And
throughout that time I have suffered from varying degrees of asthma from
moderate to severe.

The passage of the medicare bill I mentioned will certainly have an impact
on the treatment for asthma.  In many areas of the country that impact is
likely to be negative.

Wouldn't it have served you better to have gotten your facts straight before
posting a gratuitous comment?

Colin's facts are straight.  One would think that a serious and well-
regarded author would understand the meaning and purpose of the word
"support".  Your spam is truly the worst kind.  Spam cloaked in self
righteous indignation is still just spam.

Go spam somewhere else.

Have functioned?  Functioned would have sufficed.  Either way, it
sounds like past tense, except for your current attempt at
self-aggrandizement.

Welcome to alt.support.asthma!

Your post is still off-topic for an asthma support group.  Stick to
the political groups.

Absolutely moronic criticisms, all of them!

Northamericocentric indeed!

I have suffered from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (including both
asthma and bronchitis) in England, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain,
Greece, and various states of the former Yugoslavia over the past five
decades.

As you could have discovered if you had bothered to glance at my website.

Where you might also have discovered that I am familiar with the diagnosis
and treatment of these conditions according to the methods of both North
American Medicine and Zhongyi (this last for idiots like yourselves a
meaningless phrase), namely Chinese Medicine.

The only political content in this discussion has been introduced by
yourselves, since you are obviously nothing but rightwingers ruled by the
dicta of the great sage Bill O'Reilly.  And this is the sole source of your
claimed resentment, other than your silly claim that you have hung around
here a bit longer than I have.  Such dubious claims of superiority through
primacy are to be found in many primitive societies, obviously including
your own.

I am pleased to have placed a further highly relevant and on-target
communication a few inches above this one.

You are aware that COPD and asthma are not the same thing?  And that
bronchitis is not COPD either?

You went a post a political message in a medical support group.  And
cannot understand why we took issue with your behavior.

Go Away.

(And no - I do not look at the web sites of spammers.)

Your primal chest-beating is preeminent behavior?
You are a barbarian yack.

You obviously have a problem with criticism. Well, that's your problem...
However, I stand by my comments. Your post was directed at a solely American
readership - and hence was only of passing interest to any non-Americans
reading it.

As for the remainder of your post... I'm not a moron, I'm not an idiot, and
I don't feel the need to demonstrate a (perceived) superior intellect.
