Hi all, just went onto flixotide accuhaler for 6 weeks and the first
two weeks it was like "where have you been all my life".  But then my
speech became quite hoarse and raspy and I know have a constant urge
to clear my throat.  A common enough effect despite my best efforts of
mouth washing and rinsing. It got to the point that I have now stopped
using the accuhaler and just use ventolin as required. However 2 weeks
on the feelings in my throat remain.  My GP says I do not have oral
thrush and he doesnot know how long I should experience the effects.

Any one have any idea on this ?

I would like  to go back onto the accuhaler but can't tolerate the
effects on my throat, so any additional advice beyond the standard
"gargle and rinse" would be great.

Thanks

I had the same problem, only it got worse and worse.  In my case case it was
followed by heartburn  which  eventually was so bad that if I leant over
forward the acid content of my stomach would  just pour out of my mouth!
Unfortunately it was the same with all the inhales steroids, irrespective og
the  dose.  After about 18 months of playing around with different inhalers
and different doses , plus non effective  treament with antifungals (no
fungal infection though!) I was put on Ranitidine, twicw a day, for the
stomach acid.  SHOCK... it stopped the acid burninf AND also the throuat and
voice symptoms.  The throat problom might be due to indigestion?

Anyway, now I am permanently on Ranitidine so that I can continue with the
steroids.  My doctor has  reduced the steroid dose and given  me an
steroid/bronchodilator  combination inhaler.

Thnaks Michael, actually, I've had a bit of heartburn as well- geez
this could of been pointed out to me by the presecribing doctor.

Here is an intersting paper I found while googling:

I wish I had found that article 2 years ago.  The acid reduction medication
that I take every day seems to have  sorted out ALL the problems, which had
variously been assumed to be partly due to thrush, for which I had 3 bottles
of antifungal gargle soluntion and 2 courses of tablets.

In addition, the heartburn took about 6 months before it became really bad
and obviously a serious problem, during that time it became hard to control
my eating because the acid irritation crazings to eat  resulted in my
stuffing myself daily with junk food.  I'm not sure if I can blame my GP, he
has 8 mins per patient to deal with etc...
