Cough-Variant Asthma - Toddler?

Hi

In May 2007, my DD started to cough very hard at night to the point
where she threw up her dinner, daily for a couple of weeks.  Actually,
she would cough even at naps and throw up.  After about 3 weeks of
this, she was put on asthma medication and things got a lot better. I
had given her the puff till end of july at which point I stopped the
treatment and the pediatrician was fine with it.

Fast forward to now, and a week ago DD got a COLD.  She was fine but
then on Monday started to develop a cough....and last night she
coughed very had and threw up all her dinner again.  I am wondering if
this could be the cough variant asthma again showing up.  I gave her
one dose of the asthma puff this morning and wonder if i should
continue to give her the puff for about a week before stopping it.  I
have read that you can get the asthma after a cold, could this be
happening in my DD's case?  She was taking 2 puffs a day in the past
and i am thinking of just doing that.

Thanks

Nitu

If it were me, I'd be calling the pediatrician for advice before
starting to give her the asthma med at all unless it was very very
obvious that it was the same problem as before.  It doesn't sound like
it is, from what information you've given.

If it is coughing for a reason other than asthma, the asthma med could
very well make her condition worse.  It may well be asthma and the
doctor may well prescribe more asthma medication for her, but it may
be something else entirely and the only way to be as sure as you can
be is to talk to her doctor.

I agree that you should get in touch with the pediatrician.

However, colds are well known to trigger asthma so if he is having symptoms
that were suspected to be due to asthma in the past in the setting of a cold
it is very likely it is the asthma again.

I don't see how giving the meds could make it worse if the cough is due to
something else. In fact, there really aren't a lot of tests for cough
variant asthma other than to just try the meds ans see if it gets better.
