used2be - 13 Sep 2007 02:49 GMT it's been nearly a year, and i'm so tired of coughing, i could SCREAM. so are the people who live and work around me. :/
i'm new to the whole asthma diagnosis (allergy induced) and tried advair for a month plus the albuterol, but i'm not seeing much improvement. if anything, it seems as if i'm more dependant on the inhaler than ever! 4 to 6 times per day and twice per night. is this normal?!!!!

That sounds like a lot of Albuterol. At some point it becomes counter productive and it's effect lessens. I think you need to see your allergist or pulmonologist (you have one, right? If not, get one right now!). There are a lot of medications to try. Your doctor (see above) should be helping you to find the right ones. You do need some patience and persistence. I know, I've been there. Good luck.

Good luck. thanks, lou. i don't have an allergist yet, so i know i need to go to someone other than my family practitioner. when this current inhaler runs out, i'll make an appointment with a specialist.
thanks again!

> thanks, lou. i don't have an allergist yet, so i know i need to go to You need to see an allergist and likely a pulminologist. Fact is, you don't _know_ that you have asthma. It could be some other form of COPD i.e. chronic bronchitis of emphysema. I have COPD and cough up phlegm several times a day in spite of the medications but I would rather that than have it accumulate in my lungs.
If you cough until you bring up phlegm, keeping well hydrated will help you to get it up more quickly but you still need appropriate medication.

My recommendation: Don't wait. Do it now. Things have not gone well and probably won't automatically get better. Why wait? What's to be gained? The sooner you get started the sooner you have a chance to get your breathing and coughing under control.
IMHO.

i'll call someone next week. or next month. or....
:D seriously tho, i know you are right!

[quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > seriously tho, i know you are right! I wish I could reassure you but ... breathing problems are scary. Not this summer but last summer I had my first near-lethal asthma attack, which scared the sh.t out of my partner enough for him to demand that I see a doctor for it. This summer, I had about half a dozen near- lethal asthma attacks again, to the point where I stopped breathing entirely and lost consciousness.
Not happy. Very frightning. And, ending up in the emergency room with no memory of the ambulance, much less the ride there, definitely is ranked way up there on the list of worst life experiences ever...
btw, my asthma is now mostly under control with a combination of Qvar and Advair maintenance inhalers, two to three times a day. Awful stuff, but I haven't had any asthma attack worse than a mild wheezing that requires just sitting to rest or at most a single puff of albuterol. And, maybe six to ten attacks a month, whereas before I was having six to ten asthma attacks per day. Much better, and no more near-death experiences. Hope you and your doctor can find a good treatment plan that'll cut down your asthma attacks like that! What a difference it makes, even just in daily life!

4 years ago I got sick. After spending 2 months trying this or that from my gp I started having coughing fits. These lasted 1.5 to 2.5 hours. I could not believe how much stuff I would cough up during these. They would repeat every 1.5 to 2.5 days. I thought I must be dieing, it was horrible. With some coaxing my doctor referred me to an allergist. It took him 2.5 hours to get to the problem and start helping me.
I cannot say that every day is a walk in the park but I am in much better shape now than I was then. My allergist and my ENT have worked hard to help me and they have made an enormious improvement.
Go see a doctor that can help you, don't wait.
Good luck! Bob

Julie C - 27 Sep 2007 04:48 GMT Hi Used2be... Just thought I'd pop in with something here... do I recall right that you have allergies? If so, please notice that they put lactose in the Advair powder (and other dry powder inhalers, too). I've read that the lactose could be tainted with milk protein, which could cause an allergic reaction, if you're sensitive.
I took Advair and at first it was like a lifesaver, turned my life around.... but then it stopped working. I think it was due to reacting to the lactose/milk protein in the powder.
Just something to consider. JulieC it's been nearly a year, and i'm so tired of coughing, i could SCREAM. so are the people who live and work around me. :/
