Hi, I have a question for u guys.  My son has Cystic Fibrosis and is
currently in the hospital. He started swelling in his leggs and feet about
3to 4 days ago. Also in his private parts, and his stomach. He is 23 and has
never had this to happen before. His oxygen stats have been pretty low, But
they have also been low before and no swelling occured then. His Dr. says
that with low stats your kidneys start to store fluid and sodium. Is this the
only thing that could be causeing this or is he not telling us the whole
truth? Like could there be kidney or heart failure? The ultra sounds didn't
show blood clots, so I guess thats good, But I'm am so worried about him. If
any body can help we would be so greatful. Oh yeah he started him on lasix,
not sure of dose. He only had one last night and 1 today, but is still
swollen. Any helpful info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello,
I am not a doctor. I read a book related to kidney disease and learned
from the book the items on a blood test that doctors look for to determine
if a patient is having kidney problems. If you can get a copy of his most
recent blood test--look for these items:

creatinine--levels that are above normal can indicate kidney problems.

Protein in the urine can also indicate kidney problems

BUN--levels that are above normal can indicate kidney problems.

Uric Acid--levels that are above normal can indicate kidney problems.

Your son's doctor is correct--the swelled legs and feet could indicate
kidney problems but there are other medical reasons for swelled legs and
feet. The medical term for this is edema. Heart problems can also cause
edema. Your son's doctor will be able to figure out the cause of the
edema.

check out ascities, as this is what I have just been diagnoised with.
I gained a tremendous amount of water in my abdomen and legs, feet and
am now still going through tests. Just got out of hospital and had 7
1/2 liters of fluid drained from my abdomen and later more will be
drained.
I had been on lots of predisone treatments in the last two years for
my asthma.

They have put me on lasix, two other diaretics. They cannot figure out
if it is gallblader, liver. Heart fine blood pressure also fine.
The internist told me never to take steroids again, Don't know what
will happen when I have a respiratory infection.
My symptoms started out with swelling in legs and feet, then stomach
looked like I had 25 watemelons in it.
Now on strick no salt diet and only a half a glass of water during the
day.
