Hey experts,
I have difficulty breathing now and then and it seems to be
caused by some sort of indigestion. If I eat too much fruit or
certain foods can trigger off this problem. Even a stomach upset can
make my breathing difficult. It goes away after a day or two and
when I have it I need to keep belching (releasing air from my throat)
to breath. The belching isn't loud, I just manipulate my throat to
release air and this helps me stay alive. In my sleep I seem to be
able to breath otherwise I wouldn't be alive. So dear experts out
there let me know if you have any ideas. Doctors haven't been much
good. They just give me dabberprozole or omeprazole. Asthma drugs
only make me worse. Steroids like prednislone make breathing even
more difficult. Most doctors are of the opinion that I don't have
asthma. I think I have gerd but the drugs for acidity haven't been of
much help. Sometimes it goes away and then suddenly it starts , often
caused by a digestive imbalance.

I have similar problems that I'm working with several Dr's on. For me
what they're looking into is VCD (Vocal Chord Disfuntion) and issues
with the uvula. Those two problems maybe causing sleep apnea. I do not
fully understand the mechanics of it all but Dr's are telling me that
resulting sleep apnea can cause aspiration and drugs such as pump
inhibitors aren't going to help.
Have you have a full loop breathing test done? It may tell whether your
problems are asthma or some other restriction such as VCD.

I used to have VCD which has disappeared since my tonsils were removed.
while I still occasionally have asthma problems. My very last VCD episode
occurred while in recovery from that surgery and the nurse thought I was
having an asthma attack - but I knew better. I can tell you for a fact that
if you have both asthma and VCD, you can tell the difference in an asthma
attack and VCD - you have only to pay attention. Someone posted years ago
that VCD is a caused by some kind of panic disorder, but when I did a search
of the latest literature, indicatitions were that they are relating it to
silent GERD at that point. Makes alot of sense to me based on my own
personal experience. My two remaining tonsils were still extremely swollen
until I was on prescription GERD med for months.
Also alakeshwar, you should know that false positives on VCD vs. Asthma are
in the 30% range, so you have to really question a diagnosis that is based
on a meth challenge test. I have read article upon article about various
testing and there is always something new in that area as well. So although
my first set of tests indicated small airway disease, the most recent
literature now considers those results to be asthma. Like Doc00 says, if it
walks like a duck...........

I have been diagnosed with silent Gerd and my doctor told me to expect that
I would have good days and bad days. Avoiding spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine
and acid foods can help, but after months of treatment, I have concluded
that I seem to have one "bad" day a week no matter what I do.
What drugs specifically have you been on and for how long? It takes months
of the right drug for everything to heal up from my experience and then
there are still the "bad" days.

This sounds very much like an extreme case of my acid reflux/hyatal hernia.
Mine only lasts for a few minutes. As soon as I can swallow some beverage I
am usually okay. In two extreme episodes I did have it acted just like a
heart attack.
