I've been using a generic albuterol inhaler for my asthma, which is
generally under control with a couple puffs a day. The mail-order
pharmacy has now been sending HFA-propelled albuterol since the summer,
and other than the nasty taste it's been working ok. Recently I've
experienced a swelling in my throat and accompanying snoring which I
find I can eliminate by using one of my older non-HFA inhalers. Anyone
else experiencing any reactions like this from HFA inhalers?

You are not alone. Not only do I chose to pay the full price as many others
do to get the real drug, but the generic just doesn't give me relief without
a bunch of hand shaking and so on. You are right in your observations as I
have seen in the past. Trust your own observations first.
