We have lived in our house close to 41 years and have been
noticing in the last two years that black crud is on the clealing
above the air vents and vents which we have been cleaning the best we
can with water and diluted clorox. This only happens when we have the
a/c on during the long summer months and early fall.
We are thinking of having the ducts cleaned this coming Wednesday
afternoon.
I just came back from allergist and immunolgist and I told him about
the cleaning and he says not to do it as it is a scam, but to get a
swab of the vent and he will look under the scope to see if we do have
mold. I do feel we have mold. He suggested calling the cleaning off
and after his results to call a certain a/c service he has used for 20
yrs. and they can replace the ducts that are causing this for $79.
Help! Need advice. I really had bad spiro tests today and a front is
moving in tomorrow and no infection, but allergy and had to use a neb
treatment in his office.
I had not had asthma for 7 months after being very ill in March and on
long dose of preds and 500/Advair. I was put on Singulair at night and
use albuterol when needed if at all, but all of a sudden since last
weekend I have had asthma. I also have COPD, but he never addresses
the problem or that I should go to a pulmonary doctor.
He tap dances around me when I ask to have a neb treatment for home
use when I need it as when I get sick like last weekend, if I had had
one, maybe I wouldn't have had to be put back on preds.
I have been going to this allergist since he started out after
retireing from the A.F. and that is since 1984. Most of the asthmatics
that I know that have my years of asthma have a neb to use on
occasions and are on the same meds I am on.
If anyone has had their a/c ducts cleaned, please let me know if it is
worth it before Wednesday.

I heard it was a scam too. You could do better with sticking the vaccum
down there. However, if you have mold growing in there you will need to
hire someone. But regular duct cleaning includes no more than
vacuuming.

Have done what you suggested and the hose does not reach way into the
ducts.
This is one reason we were going to get the duct cleaning done so alot
of that crud and stuff that has been in there for years will be gone
for now. I know it will probably be back, but at least it will be
clean for a while.
Thank you for your reply.

if you can get someone take apart your vents and put new ones in for 79
dollars I definitely suggest that. The problem comes from the air and dirt.
Notice the amount of dust that comes into your home, that will reaccumulate
no matter how many times you clean the ducts real fast. A great solution
might be to change the vents if it costs so little. I was thinking at least
a grand for my ducts to be taken down and installed.. But even here, the
dirt will reaccumulate. Get a good air filters connected to furnace and or
air conditioning if its central and change it every month instead. and then
get a good air filter in the house but here I have yet to know which one is
good besides hepa filters which to me loses its punch in two weeks. I know
there has to be better .. somewhere.

Are you talking about the duct tubes the air flows through or the
covers over the openings in the wall?
I use 3 hepa filters, good 3M air filter that I change on a regular
basis.

what three hepa filter ( machines ) you use?
I guess one can change he duct covering or vents or the vents themselves as
they probably accumulate allot of dirt but once cleaned they probably
accumulate again shortly thereafter. I am not sure they are scams, its just
that most of the air comes into the house polluted and combines with air and
all the chemicals into the house. I change my house furnace each month and
its incredible how much dirt this thing picks up, in fact its scary like
looking at a movie about smoking in school and the black lung on the video
they show. Of course I live in a polluted town and no politician cares
