15 months old with nasal congestion

Hello
Lately my 15 months old son was under a dificult viral infection.
The doctor proposed a simple decongestant nasal spray because
the nose was blocked    or    fenistil antihistaminic syrup if
the decongestant spray would not proove to be effective.
I tried the decongestant spray repeatedly with no results
so I started giving him the antistaminic fenistil which
started action after the second dose.
The baby kept breathing through his mouth for at least 14
hours. He didn't sleep during this period and at night, still
congested since fenistil had not helped him yet, he developed
a persistent laryngic cough which led us to the hospital.
Perhaps the cough was a separated characteristic of the
infection but I feel that if we had succeeded in unblocking the
nose we might escape the cough and the visit to the hospital.
Later on the doctor said that there is nothing more to give to
a baby of that age.
Is it true or is there something else that we are allowed to
use during dificult congestions?
Thanks in advance     Leo

Babies are notoriously diffcult to treat with medications.

Your best bet would be to have the baby inhale steam.  This would help
loosen the nasal congestion and also moisten the mouth and throat
(which would probably be dry from the baby having to breathe using the
mouth only).  When my little one has a cold I shower with her
frequently and the steam with that helps, or you can buy one of those
little machines at the pharmacy which put out steam and have it near
the baby in a warm room.

this sounds kind of gross, but i have seen it work.  drug stores have a
"rubber bulb" that has a small tip. you squeeze bulb, put tip in baby's
nose, let go.  it sucks out the gunk. then you blow out gunk onto tissue. i
saw a baby get happy when he saw the bulb, because he had learned that it
helped him breath better.

Try just a nasal saline solution then use the bulb that JR recommended,
a decongestant might be causing more harm than good. Most drugstores should
have it. Also make sure his head is raised with a pillow or two at night,
should help the sinuses drain a little better. A humidifier in the room will
keep his throat from drying out if mouth breathing continues.
The shower idea is good too just make sure he stays warm.
Hope everything gets better quickly, spent many of night with my young one
in a rocking chair.

Thank you all
I will add the humidifier. I try to apply the rest
every time we have a problem but he reacts as if
I'm going to suck his brain out and I think it is
a normal reaction because he is number two and
number one now is able to talk very colorfully
about his experiences.
