I have an appt tommorow but was wondering....

Can you have bronchitis and still be breathing normally?

I have a cough that has lasted 2 weeks and some other symptoms I won't go
into but my breathing is fine.

Also, I've produced very little phlem with this cough.

I'm hoping that it's just some sort of infection because I have alot of risk
factors for a more serious alternative dignosis....which has me rather
concerned.

So, can you have bronchitis (or?) with normal breathing and very little
phlem production?

THANK YOU.

I don't think you could have bronchitis with normal breathing,
but there's been some viral thing going around our area (Chicago)
where people end up with a cough for three or four weeks.  Still,
better to have a doctor tell you that, than just assume.

Well, I've never experienced anyhting like this before.

I'm on my 16th day with it but like I say....my breathing is fine and very
little phlem.

(By the way, I live in Indianapolis)  (?)

Have they put a name on this thing you mentioned in Chicago?  I think there
is a good chance I picked it up at a local bar.

No name that I've heard of.  I had it a bit ago and the cough
lasted three weeks, but I heard that for some people it lasted
longer.  My doctor just called it a viral infection and said it
was really making the rounds..  No coughing anything up, no other
symptoms other than I was really fatigued and had that annoying
cough.

In past studies URI's that lasted three weeks or longer and were not due to
"typical" bacterial infections (bacterial bronchitis or sinusitis) or
smoking were due to viruses about 50% of the time, mycoplasma about 25%, and
pertussis (whooping cough) 25%. Both of the later are "atypical" bacteria
(because clininically they look more like viral infections than bacterial
infections) and can be treated with some antibiotics. The part that makes
even that a little trickier is that a chronic cough can linger for 4-6 weeks
after a viral bronchitis despite the active infection being over.

As it turns out, I have bacterial bronchitis...never experienced it before.

Now that I'm on my second day of antibiotics....much better.

Should have went in last week.

So, in case anyone searches......you can have bronchitis without alot of
phlem and you can have perfectly normal breathing.

Live and learn.

Thanks for the follow up information.

I guess this just illustrates how important it is for the patient
to pay attention to timelines, which I used to be really bad at.
"I don't know how long I've had it." That helped.
