Pediatricians have had a sneeking suspicion for some time that wheezing
in <=3yo's is a risk factor for later development of asthma but not
actually asthma itself.

this is interesting,my six year old son was hard to diagnose with
asthma...he suffers badly from asthma,i.e nocturnal wakening,cough etc
but yet has never shown signs of a wheeze,,,ever?

A lot of kids under three wheeze, usually when sick, and then have the
whole thing go away. About half will never have problems again and have
no family history and probably never had asthma. About half, usuall
ythe ones with a family history of asthma or allergies, will have the
wheezing return, usually after about 6 years old. These kids probably
have typical asthma.

Asthma can only present with a cough and no wheezing and many things
can cause a chronic cough other than asthma so it can be hard to figure
out.
