Chronic Asthma-->Acute Bronchitis

I was diagnosed with chronic asthma a few years ago, but so mild that it's
usually not noticeable and regular use of an inhaler wouldn't be
appropriate. However, it's the likely cause of repeated bouts of acute
bronchitis that follows any cold or hay fever attack. Sometimes, the early
use of a Ventolin inhaler is enough to stem the progression. Other times,
like right now, I have to go on a short course of Prednisone (everyone's
favorite drug).

I put a call in to the doc to see about strategies to prevent these
epidodes, which happen 1-2 times a year. In the meantime, I'm wondering if
anyone else has coped with- and resolved- this problem. I've had instant
relief with an Albuterol nebulizer treatment at the clinic, so I was
thinking about asking the doc about that for home use.

Thanks!

Boy, we sound like we were cut off the same tree. I'm tapering off pred
right now, even though the way I was tight and wheezing earlier, I
wonder if tapering is the right thing yet.

If you get useful input from the doc, please post it so I can read!
>From what I've read today, nebulizers are expensive and run badly after
lots of use, so it can be better to rent than buy them. In either case,
I'd like to have one around for days like today.

The doc prescribed the nebulizer. Retail price was $140, of which insurance
will cover 80%. It didn't help a great deal for this bout, but I'll have it
ready for the next time so maybe the impact will be more dramatic in the
early stages. That said, I'm still going to consult with a pulmonary
medicine specialist to make sure I'm doing all that can be done. I'd sure
like to avoid another course of Prednisone; I hate that stuff.
